How can I update my SGP 4.0 from Gingerbread 2.3.5?

...when there is no "check for update" option under >settings>my device>softwareupdate?

My Sgp 4.2 has this option using Gingerbread 2.3.6

Kies tells me that it does not support my 4.0 and I am not interested in rooting unless it is the only solution.

First off, just because the the 4.2 has 2.3.6 GB doesn't mean that the 4.0 would get an update to it.
Secondly, the 4.0 US has 2.3.5 and the 4.0 INTL has 2.3.6
Third, If you REALLY want 2.3.6 (even though there are NO noticeable differences between those 2) you could go to a custom ROM based off of the INTL ROM.

If it wasn't clear 2.3.5 GB was the LAST update from Samsung for the US 4.0 and there will NEVER be another update for it from them so your ONLY choice to go to something newer is rooting and ROMing.

Well Fourthly excuse me for living but I never got the memo that there were no more official updates for Sgp 4.0. A copy of the memo would have sufficed. No need to shout.

And Fifthly I stated I was not interested in rooting.
