Default HiFiMAN launches HM-901 'high resolution' audio player - engadget

This thing looks awesome. what a shame it costs $999, and $399 for the dock. No pic of the dock.

The humble personal music player has seen many iterations over the last few decades. That doesn't mean that people aren't still giving the area some love, and HiFiMAN is definitely flying the flag with its HM-901 Reference Music Player. The unit incorporates dual Saber ES9018 32-bit DAC chips, with upsampling 20 24-bit / 96kHz. It claims to be able to play most lossless audio formats, including Apple lossless. Of course, it'll still play your regular MP3s too, should you so desire. One neat trick is a removable amplifier card which means -- at a future date -- you could be able to swap them out for other amp cards that bestow a different sound, much like different guitar amps etc....

Memory-wise, it's all about the SD card, so pick your capacity all the way up to 128GB we believe.

Their previous player was/is almost a disaster in terms of sound quality. Add that impractically bulky form factor to the equation along with the ridiculous asking price and we hardly got a winner on our hands. Also knowing that 'high resolution' audio is basically a scam I think I can safely pass this one... Ps. we already had a thread for this.

Garbage in, garbage out!!! This is a POS!!! It's made from cheap components, and it's a total waste IMO.

Personally I can't believe anybody would pay that amount of money, even if it was a decent player.

Not only will they, but they'll do so proudly.
You know the old saying though....a fool and his money are soon parted.

For that kind of money, it would have to be more than decent. It would have to be the best at the time of release.

For a real small player, I'm having great success with a Samsung Exhilarate (AT&T SGH-i577). AMOLED screen 480x800, 1.2Ghz Dual Core, can swap microSDXC without removing the battery cover and I think it has a Qualcomm audio chip. STRONG audio. It can be had on ebay used for very little money -- less than most players. Upgradable to factory ICS via Kies mini.

The only real negative I perceive is that the internal memory is about 4GB -- half taken by the system.

I don't think I could imagine a gadget any more ridiculous than HiFiMan. I actually have a hard time believing this or any other of their DACs actually exists, no less anyone actually paying that much for a gadget that is the epitome of a brick. You can almost buy 2 high end smart phones off contract or a extremely good laptop for that price.

Well, it looks better than the old one (not that that's saying much). I'll give it that.

Apart from the silliness of such a player, what strikes me the most is how incredibly out of his depth that journalist is.

You should know by now that anything baged as "audiophile" is heaped with praise by the media.

On the plus side, it says SDXC on the side.

That's something I'm always in favor of.

Every thing else, though...

For some crazy reason I do like the look of this player but not crazy to be interested.

It's not so much the praise that bothers me, more the little details, like believing dB denotes a ratio.

This player looked interesting to me at first glance since I like tactile controls and the ability to load music via a memory card. Unfortunately, the price alone makes it a no go for me.
