It depends on which phone, and how much power input it needs to charge. Most people want a very compact usb battery pack, however some of the most compact ones only put out around 500ma, which is enough to charge most mp3 players, however many phones need more power than this to charge, and some might even need at least one amp. Look at the charger for the phone and see how many milliamps of output it provides, then look for a battery pack that outputs at least that much. You could also check the charger for the mp3 player if it came with one, to see if it outputs more than 500ma.

I believe the ones on monoprice a well respected and are at a good price. There also ones that you can charge your devices from removable AA batteries which can be handy because a lot of shops carry AA batteries. Also if you are insane, you could keep several dozen fully charged AA batteries on you at all times .

If you phone has changeable battery like a Samsung Galaxy or a blackberry, you could pick up internal batteries for them which would be cheaper and way more compact than external batteries. Plus, you don't have to wait for you device to charge. Under 30 seconds you have a fully charge device ready to go.

Those look huge and heavy. The second one is listed as 8.5 ounces. I didn't see the weight listed for the first. They have plenty of capacity, but might not be so comfortable to carry around. I like the idea of something with around half the power that is only around half the weight.

A usb battery pack is sort of like a camera tripod. You can find one that works great and isn't so expensive, but if it is too heavy to carry comfortably and you buy it then don't carry it around, it isn't very useful. I don't like having something that is over 8 ounces in my pocket, especially a shirt pocket. Something that is under 5 ounces, and even lighter if possible would be so much more comfortable to carry.

I guess it depends how you plan to use it though.

I've purchased a couple of VAAS 5000mah which are occasionally on sale at DailySteals $15 yesterday. They have 2 usb outputs 1-1000mah for most cellphones/mp3, and 1-2.1 for tablets. Have also seen these on ebay for cheap.

Here's Amazon link for specs. DailySteals has them on sale often tho.
