I do find them to be a bit congested on certain -very instrumentally busy - tracks. I wouldn't return them tho, as it's only on the occasional song. For the quality of sound the s500 is a newly discovered hidden gem. I'm totally sold on them.

I've had them playing all day while I was out, and will leave them overnight again to see if any change occurred. Still very impressed so far! Worth the pennies!

Default iPod Mini 2nd Reincarnation and Shure SE215

Since it is a summer I have no school and plenty of free time. Finishing up my "new" player/project. This is a 2nd generation iPod Mini with upgraded Li-Pol battery and newly installed 16gb flash drive. An hour of work and $30 overall price for device plus all parts. Upgrading to Rockbox soon!

Hehe

A Cowon M3 20GB for €20 only!!
Including of course the very rare Cowon remote, which is also compatible with M5/X5.

It's rockboxable but as there is no dualboot available for this model, I'll play a bit around with the Cowon firmware before rockboxing it

Where do you find these ?
I've been searching for a remote for my X5 for some time now.
I even have a saved search on ebay (DE) but nothing pops up.
Anyway ... great find ,

Actually there are much more offers on ebay DE and UK than on ebay FR regarding MP3 players. The market is a bit different here in France: we have a website called www.leboncoin.fr which is now as used or even more used than ebay. But those are only classified ads (kleinanzeigen), no auctions. And more generally there is less offer and demand for second-handed players. As a result, there is less choice, you need to be more patient to find what you want but once you found it, it's generally cheaper. For example, there are no crazy bidders on Cowon X5 or iRiver H300 auctions unlike ebay DE and UK.

And now, the 78th one, the masterpiece: Cowon X5 60GB

Probably the most important device which was still missing in my collection. Gifted for free by a friend today. He hasn't used it for years so the battery is a bit dying but it works pretty well. I installed Rockbox in dualboot hehe.

Which one is the best?

I have the 60GB X5 too , and it's still my favourite player. All I want is a remote for it.

Well you're clearly still missing an HD5 from there, so it's not complete yet. :P

They can actually be bought for quite cheap and getting a remote for them is really easy given it uses MD remotes. Probably one of the nicest players, once you get past sonic stage, and get a bunch of atrac music onto it :P Yes quite the hurdles but 40 hour gapless battery life with some of the most thoughtful music playback options around make it quite a nice "mood" player Holds all my gapless oldies but goodies.

JVCs HA-S500 might be worth a look at, I have them and really enjoy them. Sound excellent right out of the Zip!

@ lebellium

Wow! 78 MP3 players!!!

How many of them do you use regularly?

My collection has stopped at 16. I use 14 of them regularly (the Hitachi has got the crappiest firmware I've ever encountered and the Creative Nomad Jukebox 3 is too big).
However, I am very curious about the upcoming FiiO X3 and will probably buy that one.

Yeah, the HD5 is great. Actually I'm using mine today together with my Audio Technica ES10. I use MP3 since I want the same format for all my MP3 players so that I can switch music between them. I've got a remote from a Sony MD-player, but I don't always use it. Today I skipped the remote...

I didn't say it is complete yet. By definition a collection is never complete ^^
But the X5 is a much more important piece of collection than any Sony DAP. My priority for Sony players is a NW-Axx00 in perfect condition with the original box. But those are too often overpriced.

It depends on what you call "use"

For a normal use, i.e. to listen to music in public transports not so many and only flash-based players like Clip+, Clip Zip, Samsung Ux etc...
At home I may use sometimes HDD players but most of them have a dying battery. I only replaced the battery of the H320 for now. I'm thinking about a big batteries order for H10, H100, M3, X5 and YH-J70

Then I use many more players for Rockbox testing, debugging, themes creation etc...

At the time I also used much all Samsung players for firmware testing, bugs reports, help people on forums like ABI... that was my main activity for years.

So if you mean "use = purely listen to music", I don't use too many of them but if you mean "use = basically use the player for any reason", I almost use all of them. Only a few of them are really gathering dust

Thanks mate, maybe it's the matched matte black and chrome on the rig?

You mean a A1000 or A3000? Those are pretty horrible, why would anyone want one of those? They came after the HD5 and pretty much ruined Sony, well them and the Sony Bean. Wasn't untill the A800 series that Sony won any hearts, and it required them killing off Sonic stage.

They aren't that rare either, at least not in Europe. I still saw one on sale in a really decrepit looking brick & mortar store but not paying 100€ for that shit :P
