Default Samsung YP-GI2 (Galaxy 070)

For some reasons the YP-GH1 release has been cancelled and some people started to believe this is the end of the Galaxy Players series, especially in the USA. I can't say much about the US specific situation but generally speaking, the Galaxy Players line is not dead yet as I told you a few days ago here: http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum...ad.php?t=70747

Indeed, a new YP-GI2 got its bluetooth certification on April, 10th 2013:

https://www.bluetooth.org/tpg/QLI_viewQDL.cfm?qid=20854
https://www.bluetooth.org/tpg/EPL_De...roductID=28373

It's very unlikely that Samsung cancels 2 products one after the other so this time we should really get a new Galaxy Player, yeah!

According to the name, it should be the natural successor to the current YP-GI1 (Galaxy Player 4.2), but you know... with Samsung we never know, it could be a totally different device

"Geographic Availability" is said to be Asia only but that doesn't really mean anything since it was also the case for the YP-GI1 which finally sold worldwide ( https://www.bluetooth.org/tpg/EPL_De...roductID=19866 )
Actually we don't know yet if it's meant for the Korean market only like the big 5,8" screen YP-GP1 or also for Europe and the USA.

Tabatha reported in another thread that 1st benchmarks of YP-GI2 have been spotted on https://gfxbench.com/device.jsp?benc...stgroup=system

According to the benchmarks, the screen resolution is still 800 x 480 like the YP-GI1 but we don't know about the size yet. It runs Android 4.1.2 (vs 2.3.6 for YP-GI1).
It features the relatively new Marvell PXA988 (dual-core ARM Cortex A9 1.2GHz)
More info: http://www.marvell.com/communication...duct_brief.pdf
The GPU should be a Vivantec GC1000T, more powerful than the PowerVR SGX 540 of YP-G1/YP-G70 and PowerVR SGX 530 of YP-GI1

Actually those are the same specs as the upcoming Galaxy Tab 3 7"

Odd, the SOC from that benchmark has mobile network support.

According to Likeraser (http://blog.naver.com/likeraser/20192180387 ), the YP-GI2 will be released mid-August in Korea in a unique version: YP-GI2CW/KT.
CW means 8GB white. KT is a specific version (KT is a telecom provider in Korea) as it already exists for the YP-GP1, which includes some specific apps for calls and sms via Wifi.

We don't know yet if an international release is planned but honestly that doesn't look good. They even shut down their Korean website http://www.samsungmp3brandshop.com/ some days ago.

Seems it will be a SK only "internet phone".

Ah, but on the chance it gets an international release, might it still have player-worthy specs and price? If you must slap down my hopes, please do so gently. Otherwise, they can call it the Galaxy Nosehair Trimmer and I'd still get one!

If it gets an international release, the specs would be same I think. Indeed this device has no specific Korean features like DMB or so, and the KT version is just a matter of specific apps. So they could just take the same hardware, adapt the software a bit and ship it worldwide.

But honestly I don't think that will happen. As there is only a KT version in Korea, there is almost no chance it will get an international release.
Even the YP-GP1 (Galaxy Player 5.8) which is only available in Korea exists in several versions including normal/KT/LGU and 16/32GB.

If a normal version comes out later, you may expect it to be available from websites such as exportprive.com but the KT version will most likely only be available in KT stores.

The Korean user manual has been published yesterday:
http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/co..._KOREAN1.0.pdf

Nothing really interesting except the official specs:

edit: a 3W bluetooth Audio Dock will also be released:

So what's the upshot for a near-total Android newb (my Galaxy Note 10.1 is my current and only such device, and I've had it for a year)? Would I be best served getting a reconditioned Player and enjoying the last fading embers of ICS support, or swallow hard and go another route entirely? Or can I still hold out realistic hope I can eventually snag one of these and get help from a developer site in "hacking" it?

[or should I buy one of those fruit-logo devices that would, among other unfortunate things, get me banned from this site by definition? Just a little coping humor...]

What's new? Video playback time is 6hrs instead of 5hrs now... lol

And the product page: http://www.samsung.com/sec/consumer/...er/YP-GI2CW/KT

According to this link this is a Home Phone for Korea and not an MP3 player. Last line states the Player only did not sell well, so looks like there will not be another Player Only version for Jellybean.

It's only a normal Galaxy Player with some specific apps for call and text messaging via Wifi. Call it "Home Phone" if you want but that's only a software matter

As already said in this thread, there were also a KT (Korea Telecom) and LGU versions for other players such as YP-GP1, YP-GB1 and YP-GB70.
The only difference is that this time there is no other version available. If it's only sold by KT, we'll never see it for sale on other websites like exportprive.com etc...

And yes, I don't think they'll release other Galaxy Players so most likely this is quite the end of the long YEPP story...

I was surprised not to find any review about this player in Korea looking for "YP-GI2" on google.co.kr but actually it is not marketed under his name at all. Using the Korean name "스마트홈 폰 HD mini" gave me more results.

http://smartblog.olleh.com/3141
And a nice full review with pictures here: http://blog.naver.com/PostView.nhn?b...tTypeCall=true
Google translation: http://translate.google.fr/translate...ypeCall%3Dtrue

It is for sale here:
http://shop.olleh.com/weblogic/HomeI...EventBn_131018
That includes a docking station with a line-out.

But an optional Audio Dock ESP-30 (2x 3W) also exists. It features bluetooth 3.0 with apt-X as well as a 3.5mm line-in.

It is really marketed as a home phone and it looks like you can only get it with a 2 or 3-year contract.

Now you know a bit more about the latest Galaxy Player which will never reach Europe and the USA

How much does this cost? Either I'm not seeing it or google translate isn't accurately translating the price for me.

It seems to be the first cousin of the Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 I9152. The MSRP on that is ~$470 so if the YP-GI2 is anywhere near that I can see why it wouldn't be released in the US. I don't think most people would want to pay a little less for a device that has a few different features and is somewhat lighter.

It's a Galaxy Player only sold by Korea Telecom with special korean apps to use it as a home phone (it uses Wifi for calls). I don't really see the link with the Galaxy Mega 5.8 which has a much bigger screen (5.8" vs ~5") and which has SIM/3G vs Wifi only for YP-GI2. Smartphone vs Player

The price of the device depends on the phone subscription as stated in my table above. However I'm not even sure you can really buy it. It might be simple renting as long as you pay the subscription. That's not clear with the google translation.

My bad on the screen size. Guess trying to wade through all the translations I missed completely on the screen size.

What made me compare the two is that the line between smartphone and player isn't nearly as sharply defined in the US as it once was. Trying to bring this to market here would probably have resulted in what happens when people see my YP-G1. They like it until they find it can't be used as a standard cell phone. Then they lose interest.
