Default What volume level to use as a line-out (with Fiio E11)?

I just bought a Beyerdynamic DT990 headphones (250 Ohms version) and a Fiio E11 amplifier. I bought the latter thinking that my X7 won't be able to power the DT990 un-amped. Wrong. It turns out the player works beautifully even without the amp - it's loud enough at 37/40 and sounds great. At 40/40 it's too loud. When I connect the E11 the sound seems a bit fuller, but the difference is not one of night and day. I wonder if others see a more significant difference? Has anyone managed to figure out the optimal volume level for use as an alternative to a line-out?

Generally amping high impedance headphones just makes them louder, so its not surprising that you don't benefit from an amp.

Line level is generally the maximum or nearly maximum volume level on a headphone out. I would run the volume at maximum to the amp, and then use the amp for volume control. If you hear any clipping, lower the player volume a level or two. That or just don't bother with the amp at all.
