There can be several reasons - inconsistent voltage pass through for charging, problems identifying the player when plugged into a hub, potential data loss during file transfer. I am sure there are others.

I have Belkin 7 port, wall wart powered, USB 2 hubs on both of my computers and I only plug my ZVM and Nano+ into the hubs. Works great for me.

You bring up a good point - you use quality equipment rather than some of the really cheap stuff that can be found AND you use a powered hub. Many people do not use a powered hub (or don't power the hub they have) and that can create issues.

Yeah lifter. I have a couple of cheap hubs and they are just exactly that. I really need to trash them, but sometimes I'll use one with the laptop when I don't have power available. Sometimes it'll work and sometimes not.
Buy the good stuff the first time. You're gonna end up getting it anyway so save the money and skip the cheap stuff that doesn't work. Now if I could just learn to take my own advice.
