zune died, not recognized

My zune HD went black and unresponsive. since it's not the first time it happened, I did the 3 finger salute (the power button, button on the side and the one on the front) and it said connect your zune to the PC.
I did that.
then it said on your pc start the zune software and restore your zune.

But the zune software says no device attached. so I'm a bit confused.

any thoughts?

OK- I connected the zune to another computer this running Win 7. It installed the zune software and tried to restore the zune but now gives a message
There was an error while trying to update your device with the latest software. Please try again. An unknown error occurred. Error Code C00D11CD (80072EE2)
I googled this and I keep getting hits on some zuneclan site but there is no response to this question.
