Default Is the Z going to be superceded soon?

Hi, I hope there's people still checking out this forum.

My Sony NW HD5 finally had a stroke and died after 7 years of faithful service. As it always worked so well, I have paid no attention at all to mp3 player evolution since late 2005. I am now startled to see how far they have come.

That said, my instinct is to stay with Sony as I'm a jazz muso and want to hear things realistically and as detailed as possible. Also, I hope that I can easily import my Sonicstage library (yes, it is that old) more easily into a new Sony than to another make of mp3 player. Or, is this no longer an issue?

I feel as though I want to take a leap of faith and get a Z1070, but I'd just like reassurance that Sony aren't imminently about to release a new equivalent? Is it likely to last 7 years like my previous walkman did?

I'm not remotely a tech-head, and could ultimately care less about having all the internet bells and whistles that these modern players have, I just seek superior sound quality and minimal stress at importing what I've already burned once onto my new device.

Any help will be gratefully accepted.

Thanks in advance.

Im hoping that new sony walkmans will be released at MWC 2013 at the end of the month. As for durability it seems to me that Sony has been opting for cheaper materials these past few years to improve their profit. All the products they have been releasing lately feels like cheap plastic that will break really easily . I have been using the Sony Walkman X Series for close to 5 years and have had few problems. Comparing the Sony Walkman X Series and the Sony Walkman Z Series and it is immediately obvious that the X feels alot more premium. The headphones even feel like its made of metal. But this is just my thoughts. Other people may think that Sony has been releasing quality products. Even their flagship headphones which are the XBA series of headphones feel like a downgrade from thier predecessors which had metal construction and housing.

I just saw this reply on the sony blog post but it was posted in January. I found the story to be really interesting. I don't know if it is made up or not but take it with a grain of salt. Here is exact message

I would like to get the straight scoop from Sony on something. For months I tried to pick up the Z-series mp3 player with the Android system. It was a 1060 blk, I believe. Saw it on Black Friday at half price. Tried to order it and it kept saying they were out of stock and when I called, they repeated that. I was promised that when it came back in that they would let me know and allow me to get one at that price. They assured me, “This item has NOT ben discontinued. We are just out of stock.
Then about 12/28 or 12/29 I pulled it up and it said, “This item has been discontinued!” I was not happy.
So I called up and the woman I spoke with grabbed a supervisor. She had me hold for 10 minutes and came back saying she has great news. She said, “Mr. Claessens, I have great news. Unfortunately you were given bad information before. The Z1000 series mp3 player was discontinued and that is final. But the reason for them stopping that product was because we have a new one being released. You will be VERY, VERY happy that you waited. Because this new series, called our new D-series, is not going to run on the old Android 2.0, but the newest Jelly Bean, Android 4.2. The sound quality is going to be far superior to the Z1060, it is going to have a much better and faster processor, it has more features that our consumers wanted, and it will be less money. The product specialist I spoke with said that this will BLOW AWAY THE Z1060!”
She then stated this exactly: “I have our email in our system. The moment that this is released you will be notified. It is scheduled to be released the 2nd week of January. So in about a week or two you will be getting an announcement about a special opportunity you will have to see not only this product, but a bunch of other products. When you get that, go check it out and then call us to order your new D-series Walkman with Android 4.2.”
Great. I was so excited. Then early this week I received the big announcement, just like she said. I went online and watched the entire show where all of your new Sony products were shown. But there was no new Android-based Walkman or D-series.
So earlier today I hopped on the phone and spoke with someone at Sony. She would not give me a product specialist or manager or supervisor. But she said she talked to some big whig a number of times. Here is what she said, “Mr. Claessens, I am terribly sorry, but you were told false information. We have no D-series Walkman. We have discontinued any Walkman mp3 players with the Android based software. We are no longer making them. There has been no replacement for the Z series and there never will. We are going with the wireless headset style now. We are no longer going to make the traditional style mp3 walkman any more. We have a couple styles left, the E-series and the F-series. That is it. And they will be going away soon.
Here is what I would like: the truth. I would like to know why the woman two weeks ago had so much great information about a new Android-based mp3 player to take the place of the NWZ-Z1060, and today I was told that was all a lie.
What is really going on? I have been patiently waiting for a long time for this. And I want one. But I need to hear the truth from Sony. It does not make sense that there are two completely different stories, but sincere. But I will say the supervisor lady 2 weeks ago seemed MUCH more knowledgeable and convincing than the lady today.
I hope to hear something from you soon.

Well, there's the new F. The Z has been discontinued about a year after its initial release in NA. I guess I'm one of the early adopters, buying mine last February.

I get why people feel that the X is of higher quality than the Z. The textured steel frame just screams quality. But at the same time the X has headphone socket failures and HOLD switch failures, both being expensive to repair (although if you look at the headphone socket, it's connected to the main board by a piece of ribbon wire and not just soldered on, intended for easier maintenance).

What I really want to see from Sony's music department is a proprietary Walkman OS (such as the one found in the X) - NOT Android - held within a WM-D6C body (or if you like your portable DAPs small, a WM-DC2). But nowadays we're never going to see that level of construction anymore. The $600 or something AK100 is known for its unevenly mounted back panel (one of the corners juts out).

About the earphones though, I own the XBA-4 and I don't find them to be cheap-feeling. I also own the MDR-EX1000 and in fact, I prefer the lightness of the XBA-4 over the apparent quality of the EX1000 (not talking about the intrinsic sound quality here, though the XBA-4 really do perform MUCH better than the EX1000 for Vocaloid-type music). Made in Japan or not, at least the XBA-4 doesn't have the fading lettering/chipping paint problems of most of the EX1000's. And any brand-new EX1000 you buy today are going to have their L and R identifications simply printed on instead of embossed (sort of a bas-relief kind of thing going on) like on the earlier ones. In the end, overbuilding these things are just not worth it anymore. Same reason why almost no one makes double-shot keycaps anymore (and let the OCN folk jizz all over their Duckys and Decks and WASDs and Filcos and...).

Sony has made some quality-oriented electronics over the years, mostly Qualia (see how well that worked out) and to a lesser degree, the ES-series of some of their audio products. But I guess the money is just not good enough.

Also isn't the 25th or something Walkman Anniversary coming up?
