Default Good converter for OS X?

I'm going bonkers trying to convert videos to the proper format for my 4GB player.

I tried Iriviter, but it hasn't been updated since last summer, and half the options are missing in the OS X build. I tried Handbrake also, but can't figure out which settings to use.

Does anyone have any suggestions for an easy and useful converter on OS X?

Thumbs up ffmpegx

After much agonizng with iriverter on osx, I trashed it and went back to ffmpegx. through trial and error (every solution it offered btw) I finally hit the only one that worked;

avi xvid preset

(video tweak = xvid (.avi) mencoder, 320x240, 512 kbps 29.97 fps no crop)
(audio tweak = mp3, 44100 hz, 128 kbps)

http://homepage.mac.com/major4/

I know officially use this for everything video
