Problems H340 Jukebox...help?

Hey all,

Back in January I bought a refurbished iRiver H340 (40 gigs). I haven't had a problem with it, except for slow transfers that would sometimes end abruptly. Yesterday a friend with the same Mp3 player told me if I hooked it up to the USB port via the DATA port (instead of the Media port) transfers would go smoother. Getting the music onto the iRiver was easy, but now when I turn it on the display reads as empty. When I plug it back into the computer (PCs and Macs) the data shows up so I know the hard drive hasn't been wiped out.

Any advice?
