Default ZVM is Broken

A few months ago my husband dropped my ZVM and broke the screen. Got an RMA but didn't have the $ to send it in; so it just sat around.

At first after breaking the screen it would still turn on, charge and whatnot. Then it just stopped working. I tried to charge it today and it won't, the computer doesn't recognize it at all.

I emailed creative about the new problem, but they haven't gotten back to me yet.

I've had it for less than a year.

So now my questions:

Is is at all fixable?

Related to the screen breaking?

If it's not fixable will they send a new one? Or am I pretty much screwed?

Anything I can do to try and 'fix' it myself? It won't turn on, at all. Won't connect to the computer, won't charge. Right now it's looking like a very nice paperweight.

ETA~ I did read the sticky up top, and it didn't work. There's nothing listed there at all.

Hiya, Jennifer, and welcome to ABi!

Without a working screen, it's hard to tell what the player is actually doing. However, there is a blue light on the power switch that blinks to indicate charging status:
Off - Off/No Power
On - On/Powered/Charged
Blinking (slow) Powered/Charging (player is either on or off)
Blinking (fast) No Power/Battery too low to power

It sounds like the battery in your player has drained to such a point where it cannot power up, and therefore cannot get recognized by the computer. Your best bet is to either leave it plugged into your computer (it can take up to 24 hours to charge this way) or use an AC power adapter plugged into the player's DC-in jack (NEVER plug a power adapter into the USB port). If you don't have a Creative wall charger, you can use a PSP charger, or any wall adapter that supplies 4.5-5VDC at up to 2400mA, positive polarity on the tip.

Your broken screen is fixable, but requires sending it to Creative for repair. However, in order to reduce turnaround time, they will likely replace it with a refurbished unit.

Try to charge your player as I explained above, and keep us posted on what happens. Best of luck, hon!

Thanks.

Should I bother with charging it? Or just send it in?

That depends. If you have anything in your player that you don't have backed up on your PC somewhere, then you should charge it so that you can recover whatever you need off the player before sending it in. Otherwise, just sent it in.

All our music is backed up; we have some videos that aren't but they're not really a big deal.

Do you know what they'll do with it when they get it? Especially if it won't turn on? I don't want to send them $80 and have them tell me there's nothing they can do. Plus I've never sent anything in for repair before, lol, I have no idea how it works.

I wouldn't send it in for not powering up, because all that needs is just time to charge. I would send it in for the broken screen (if the screen is visibly shattered or cracked, then there should be no question as to what's wrong with the player). They will either repair your player (and they will have to power it up to confirm they fixed it), or swap it with a refurbished model. Either way, the charging issue will be automatically addressed.

Problem. I don't have a receipt. We got it from Dell, and they don't have a record of our shipment.

I think I'm pretty much screwed.

Ouch! That does make things potentially ugly.

If you paid with a credit card, do you still have the statement that shows the purchase? This might help.

Otherwise, I think the going rate for screen repair is around $85.

Ugh, lol. Called Dell and they have the record; they're supposed to email it to me. No idea why it's not online, but oh well.

Our 1 year is coming up fast, 16 December.

So...

Creative emailed me back about my new issue and said this:

Quote:
I understand that you are having issues with your player as the screen
crack and now the player has stopped working.

Based on the information provided, I am sorry to inform you that the
limited warranty does not apply to the damage caused by normal wear and
tear, abnormal use or conditions, misuse, neglect, abuse, accident,
improper handling or storage, exposure to moisture, unauthorized
modifications, alterations, or repairs, improper installation, improper
use of any electrical source, undue physical or electrical stress,
operator error, non-compliance with instructions or other acts which are
not the fault of Creative, including damage or loss during shipment.

The limited warranty provided by the player does not cover damage caused
by mishandling. Since the damage was caused by mishandling, an out of
warranty RMA will need to be issued.

And they want me to pay $200 for a new one. I do still have the original RMA, but now I don't know if we should send it in under that one or not.

And I left it plugged into the USB overnight, and there's been no change.

Ouch! That sucks!

For $200, you'd be better off buying a used ZVM. Or, it might be a good time to consider getting a newer player, like the new Zen.

The older Zen is supposed to be *cheap* at TRU on Friday, I'm trying to sell some stuff to pay the $200 for it today and then get the difference back on Friday. My husband won't pay for me to get a new one; even though he's the one that broke it. I'm really upset at him.

And for fun (and proof, lol) here's what the screen looked like after he broke it

Ouch! Yeah, Creative definitely wouldn't honor the warranty with that one! If my hubby had done that to me - and then refused to buy me a new one - well... Things would get pretty ugly!

So, are you going to try to get this one fixed? Going to get a used/refurbished one? Or going for a new one altogether?

Best of luck with RMAing your Husband under warranty. Clearly a manufacturing fault and not fit for purpose.

Staple the paperwork to his butt and then send him back to momma 'collect'

I didn't want to say that, but I was definitely thinking it!

I don't know. I just got a NDS on Saturday so I'm trying to sell that, and then the broken ZVM. If all that works out I'm going to have to get dh to 'lend' me the rest.

I just don't see what he was all set to pay $85 to get this one fixed, but won't let me do $80 to get a new player. So I'm just going to sell everything I can and pay for it that way. He's been enjoying the DS, so it'll hurt him too.

He's got a crappy little 1g player that won't even turn on at times; maybe I should throw it against the wall. Oh his excuse for not replacing it is that a few months ago our kids were chewing on my cell phone and it corroded the connector thing on the bottom and put it into 'car kit' forever, and i obviously couldn't use it then. so i got a new phone for $10.

he replaced that, so he doesn't need to replace my mp3 player.

i'm just about fed up with him right now.

Poor sweetie!

You sure he can't be RMA'd back to the manufacturer for warranty repair?

That's a typical guy for you. He'll expect you to repair your shoes with bubble gum and duct tape to save a few bucks, but if his stereo starts to sound a little "off", he'll replace the entire thing without a second thought!

The problem is, his crappy little 1G player would probably survive a nuclear holocaust.
