Booting issues. Dead hard drive?

I had a bit of this in another thread, but I'll just summarize it here. I hope there is still help for my ZVM 60gig fatty, because I've only had it 4 months.

Basically I had battery and charging issues. After replacing the battery I still had some USB charging and windows recognition issues (though it charged from an adapter) and eventually I got it to recognize windows enough to do a firmware update.

In addition to that, it shows the "creative" screen, and then the "zen" screen and then just black. I had hear the hard drive doing it's thing and I've run format and clean-up on it and didn't get any errors (although when I ran clean-up the first time on a half full drive it got to 96% and sat there a REALLY long time before finishing).

I was thinking about replacing the harddrive with with one of the IPOD ones (which you can find on ebay for about $60).

I'm wondering if it's worth it though. Does it sound like there are more issues than just a dead harddrive? Is there any way to be sure before I potentially waste even more money??

You say you did a firmware update? Which version did you update to?

BTW, you may want to check in the "Hacks and Mods" subforum for hard drive selection tips. I don't think the iPod drives are in any way compatible with the ZVM.

I would try reinstalling the firmware again. If that doesn't work, then you may have a bad platter on your hard drive, and replacing the drive may be your best option.

An ipod one is just the same, once formatted and zen firmware loaded on. It's a zen hard drive, it has all the same connections etc.
