Only WAV recording?

hey all, newbie here... thanks for the great support forum ! so ive been looking for a month for the right unit for me, having made a couple mistakes.... basically, strong battery (and/or replaceable), WMV (or FLV) for movies, WMA/MP# for video, 8gb memory, SDHC slot, LINE-In Recording I have a bunch of tapes i want to encode, so line in is nice, and voice recording for storyboarding. The PILOT looked PERFECT !!!! and kept me from buying the Cowon D2. But I just found out ------- the Pilot ONLY RECORDS IN .WAV ???------ This is the oldest, worst, BIGGEST file system there must be... a simple WMA or MP3 of 4mb, could be like 500mb in WAV. So, based on WAV only, I can NOT buy the Pilot ----- ****can anyone tell me if this will change in the NEAR future? thanks all. jim -the greatly disappointed

Seeing as digitaldel is an Insignia developer, and one uniquely responsive to user comments and questions, you can pretty much take his word as king around here. So, to repeat: It will record WMA too.

Well, since you're a noob... WAV is not a file system. It is an audio format. It is certainly not worse than MP3, quite the contrary, it is a 100% perfect digital representation of the music that happens to not be compressed. Both MP3 and WMA are actually worse than WAV when you study the waveform of the audio, but due to lots of research, MP3 and WMA tend to be missing parts that humans don't normally hear. As audio formats go, they are known as lossy - some of the original audio has been lost. WAV is lossless, meaning it's all there. Whether or not it's older is completely irrelevant as it serves a different purpose. You were right on with the biggest, though! There are other lossless formats that use compression to obtain (very roughly) files about half the size of WAV. These include a nice free and open-source codec called FLAC. The great thing about any of the lossless formats is that you can transcode them to any other format (lossless or lossy) provided you have the right encoding program without any generational loss.

So, please don't spread the word that WAV sucks and MP3 rocks, they are used for different situations. For a portable audio player, sure WAV isn't really efficient... just be glad the Pilot will also use WMA for recording!

hey mate, sorry for the misuse... i had meant it was the worst because of file size.... it was meant to be one statement.... not a comparison of quality <wink>

thanks though, and yeah, discovered that WMA is supported, which i prefer for recording.
