Default Why should i bother with firmware?

Up untill i found this forum, i had no knowledge what so ever about firmware.
I dident even know it existed.
I have recently repaired a few issues with my zen and it is running fine (now), but after reading up, i discovered that i am still using firmvare version 1.11.

can somebody explain the advantages/disadvantages of upgrading firmware? what are the risks?

also, will i have to delete all my music/videos/pictures off of my zen?
thanks!

Firmware is the player's operating system. It is to the ZVM what Windows is for a computer. Just as it is important to keep Windows up to date, so too with a player's firmware.

There is sometimes the risk that a firmware update may contain bugs not present in an older firmware version, but the ZVM's latest firmware is stable and mature, so there is no risk in updating to the latest version. In fact, you may find things work just a little bit better after updating (I can't remember off the top of my head all the revisions that have been incorporated since 1.11, but they are plenty).

Your music/photos/videos will not be touched during the firmware update, but you may need to resync music obtained through subscription services or online stores to reaquire their licences.

The latest firmware versions (both are stable):
For the ZVM30: 1.62.02
For the ZVM60: 1.21.02

What's the latest ver. of frimware for ZV:M (60GB)?
I saw in creative.com. It was ready to download: Creative ZEN Vision:M 60 GB Firmware 1.21.02.
But I have a problem.
After Install it my device workes slowlly?
What's the matter? What's solution?

Boot into recovery mode (turn the player off, push and hold the switch to the "On" position, while still holding it to on, press the reset button and release). Select "Clean Up" from the menu, after doing the clean up, reboot the player.

Isn't it true that the latest firmware removed the option to record FM radio? That's why I'm holding off for now.

No, that's not true, it's an older version that did that, the latest 30GB firmware has FM recording.

The 60GB has never had FM recording.

I have the 30gGB Vision:M and currently have version 1.40.02 (had my player since April 07 and have had no problems). What exactly will the latest firmware version (1.62.02 going by this thread) give me that I currently don't have? Is there a list of upgrades or improvments somewhere that this upgrade will provide?

Cheers.

Default ron

for some reason when I try to reload my firmware my Zen freezes. When I reboot I get the message that I have a firmware problem. I have gone through all of the typical steps and even run SpinRite on my drive which is fine. I have added the patch for WMP11. Does the firmware reside on the HD or is there flash memory on the board? Any ideas of where to go next. I have tried to reload older versions of firmware as well..............Any manual way to erase the firmware? I have reformated the HD.

Firmware version 1.4x.xx had the dreaded charging bug which was caught and fixed in 1.50.00 and later.

I am not at all sure what you're asking, or what you've done, so bear with me here...

With exception of the bootloader and Recovery Mode facilities, the firmware resides on the hard drive. However, the firmware is not wiped when the drive is reformatted. A reformat really doesn't do anything more than wipe the player's database.

If you got a Firmware Problem message, your player should have automatically gone to Recovery Mode. From there, you're going to have to select the "Reload Firmware" option, plug into your computer, and retry.

Charging bug? I don't think I've had any problems with the charging. What exactly is this bug?
