I just got a refurbished Zen. It's generally ok, but whenever I start up a song or video I can feel the hard drive rumbling and hear a single click. There's also usually 2-3 seconds of lag before the song starts playing, but no problems after that. It doesn't happen when switching songs quickly, so it might be a normal hard drive thing, but it does seem a little loud. It's audible in a quiet room holding it about three feet away from my head.
Suggestions? And while we're at it, where can I get a replacement hard drive for a good price if I have to? |

Really though, I'm also getting a lot of lag on the menus and stuff. Things in general seem jerky. Is that normal?

Probably not, can you load things onto the player at normal speed, because I fear your hard drive may be on the way out

Anyone tried a disk cleanup for the menu lag? I have this problem once in a while but a cleanup usually clears it up.

How do I do that without clearing my whole drive?

Disk cleanup is basically the same as a defrag on a computer; the only thing it will erase is settings (like EQ, theme, clock settings, etc). It's good to do this once in a while. A reformat (which will clear the harddrive) is also good to do once in a while, but budget some time to this as it will take a while to rebuild all your files onto the player. I think it took me around an hour and a half to format and rebuild.
To get to the recovery menu to run a cleanup or format, hold in the reset button while turning the unit on, and release the reset before the power switch. The player should boot right into it. |

Yeah, I did it and it seems a little better.
EDIT: More better than I thought, actually. |
