Default what does a dead pixel look like?

are they white or black?

do they show up when the zen is off?

i have a tine white speck that appears to be floating above the screen when i tilt the zen and look at it from the side. it can be seen when it is off and on.

i have been carrying it in my pocket and i hope it is a speck of dust rather than a dead pixel.

which brings me to my one complaint about the zen. it doesnt have little rubber covers to go ever the mini usb port and the audio jack.

White looking pixels (always on) are called hot pixels.
Black looking pixels (always off) are called dead pixels.

Hot Pixel:

Since hot pixels are basically always on and white looking, they will show up more visibly on a black or off screen.

It could be a hot pixel, but since you have been carrying it your pocket, I would guess that it is probably lint or dust like you mentioned before instead of a hot pixel, but it could very well be.

Can you move or remove it my taking a lint free cloth and applying some light pressure on it while rubbing back and forth (and lightly tapping)? Try using something a little pointed but not sharp under the cloth like a dull pencil or stylus. Also try adjusting the brightness of the screen up and down to see if there is a change in how it looks/reacts, if any.

i am pretty sure it is dust under the screen cover and the screen.

in the daytime it was white and now at night it is dark.

not sure i wanna try to take apart my zen just yet. and i think it will eventually be like a speck on my glasses and i wont even notice it after a while.

i think i should probably find another way/place to carry it.

it looks like it is hard to keep dust out of this thing when i watched it being taken apart in the video clip. there is no seals or dust barriers in it. i guess that is part of what makes the thing so much cheaper than a ipod.

Why are we so quick to compare everything to an ipod, they get dust too ... why not say I wish my player had built in dust covers as good as the cowon's

i dont know too much about anything. that thing is always what pops into my mind.

untill tonight i had no idea what a cowan was.

looks pretty nice.

if it has better dust protection that might be my next purchase.

i am still leaning towards dropping the big bucks on the new 7" archos with the 160 GB HD and touchscreen.

Well, you didn't say you had a screen cover on it. If you get a Zen skin from Best Skins Ever (and make sure the screen is nice and clean when you go to apply it), you won't have this issue.

no i meant the actual clear part of the case of the zen itself. not an add on case. i dont have anything like that yet.

this little speck is inside the zen.
