Default Colored Back

OK, Last night I got this great idea, and it worked!

You can spray paint the back of a Sansa and it looks pretty nice. I spray painted mine white. (I used this white colored spray on enamel made for wood and metal)

1. Just unscrew the back 4 screws
2. Once you have the back off, take it outside on a cardboard box (or newspaper, etc.)
3. Before you spray it, I recommend sanding it down a little first with a very fine sandpaper. I KNOW that it scratches it, but you'll cover it up anyways right? (You don't have to do this step, but I didn't try without sanding, so that's why I say "recommend")
4. dr_howardfine suggests that you put it in the oven at 250F for 10 minutes before you spray so that the paint sticks on better.
5. Take the color and spray away! I'd recommend white, because white on black on blue is a nice color scheme.
6. Leave it there for 45 minutes or so and it'll be dry
7. After it completely dries, you should add a layer of clear coat so it doesn't scratch off, well and for shininess! (Also suggested by dr_howardfine)

After it dries, you can even get a different color and a stencil and spray on a pattern!

EDIT: Pictures added!

...Even the screen!? (just kidding)

My Sansa actually looks great, because now it's de-branded!

It doesn't look as good as DaHarder's MP3 players, but it still looks good

Cool, what would be a good color for a black and red scheme (changing the LEDs)

The only thing I'd add is to put it in the oven at about 250F for 10 minutes just before spraying. The baked on finish will be more durable.

Also, add a clear coat over the color to give it extra gloss and scratch resistance.

I just picked up a bricked e260 that I was able to restore with recovery mode, but the back is all discolored. I'll be trying this out (hopefully) soon!

Bake it?

And, yeah, I'll add that, you need to add a clear coat because mine scratches off a little bit.

wow that looks great. if i had enamel paint.... which i will probably have soon, i would do this.

the white does look nice, but i'd like to find a forum talking about how to make the back a mirror finish. i'd definitely do that since i have wet sand paper and buffing compound

Look in your local phone book and see if there are any "chroming shops" in your area. You know, where all the custom bike and car builders get all their stuff chromed. As small as the back is, it couldn't cost that much; the biggest detriment would be the waiting time. Although, because it's such a small job, they might squeeze you in ahead of somebody.

They're not going to make any money on you; you're more of a "nuisence customer" to them, so they might just give you priority to get you on your way and out of their hair. Just be sure to say "Thank You Very Much" if they do.

Remember though, that a highly polished chromed or mirrored back is going to scratch just by "breathing on it"! Not really, but it WILL scratch VERY EASILY! Just ask any of the original Ipod owners. Their backs would scratch just by slipping it into and out of their pockets. After about a week the damn thing would look 5 years old!

well, long after my post here, i made my back chrome with (of course) my technique of wet sandpaper and a buffing wheel... not buffing compound and a paper towel. here's my link if anyone's interested. feel free to comment.

I also think this thread should be stickied, it's a nice mod.
