Default New Zen user

Ok so I really can't find just a discussion sub forum on here so I'm going to put this here, move it if you need to. Just wanted to stop in and say I am a new Zen video 4gb user as of two days ago and I'm pretty impressed with what you get for the money and how easy this thing is to use. I have had both zune and ipod and by far this one is the easiest and most bang for the buck. I owned a 30gb Zune video but way to bulky so traded it for Ipod classic 30gb, liked it ok. Sold the ipod classic and got the ipod touch because I thought yeah I can surf the internet anywhere there is a hot spot but that got old quick. So I played with the thought of getting a 4gb ipod nano video for a month or so, but after seeing the price compared to the Zen I changed my mind quickly. I wanted a media player that also had the capability of FM radio so the Zen came to mind. The fact that the Zen had a SD slot available for extra storage was a huge selling point. I will admit the click wheel is alot better and nice looking but the ease of the Zen organizer is 10x better than crappy ol Itunes in my opinion. I hated Itunes the whole time I used it and could never really grasp how to use it really really good. I guess I am just a basic click here and transfer kind of guy, itunes made that a lot harder for some reason. The Zen could definately do something better with the FM radio setup, not just autoscan but allow you to type in your radio stations like the Zune does. Anyway overall I am very pleased with the Zen for the money and all that it can do. I purchased a 4gb video for $96 and then purchased a 4gb SD card from Office Depot for $23. So for $119 I got a brand new 8gb Zen and would have had to spend $150+ for a brand new 4gb ipod nano. I was always one to join the band wagon and go with what you see all over commericials and hear everyone talking about (ipod, zune) but now I realize do a lil research and try other products out and you might just benefit more.

Ditto.

I bought a 4GB Zen not 3 weeks a go, and love it. The Ipod Nano doesn't even compare to what the Zen ahs to offer.

Great deal too: got in on sale for 99.99 (CND)- 40$ cheaper than the 4GB Nano.

Great bang for your buck.

I saw Creative selling refurbished 4GB Zens for $64.99 and Amazon selling new 4GB Zens for $90.95 with free shipping.

Default Zen Pricing

I have been watching the prices of the Zen, not so much because I really want to buy a Zen, but because prices for the Zen affect the pricing of other brands of mp3 players. I find this very amusing though.

2 gig $75
4 gig $95
8 gig $135
16 gig $165
32 gig $300

How many people would choose an 8 gig rather than a 16 gig just to save $30? Buying a 16 gig rather than an 8 gig means paying just $3.75 for each extra gig over 8 gigs. The 4 gig Zen is $95. Buying an 8 gig Zen rather than a 4 gig one means paying $40 more for just 4 extra gigs. That is $10 a gig! Overall, the 2 gig and 16 gig seem like the best buys, while imo the 8 gig and 32 gig seem overpriced compared to the other Zen players. What do you think? Perhaps it can be argued that since there aren't many 32 gig flash based players, the 32 gig deserves the premium price of being almost double the 16 gig price. Imo the price on the 8 gig makes no sense though. These prices are from the B&H website.

PS. Since I am bored, I did a bit of algebra. Looking at just the prices on the 2 gig, 4 gig, and 8 gig, one calculates a price of $55 for the player without memory plus $10 per gig for the memory. according to this formula, the 16 gig should cost $215, while the 32 gig should cost $375.
Paying $10 per gig for memory seems unreasonably high though.
Looking at just the pricing for the 4 gig and 16 gig, one gets $71.68 for the player without memory plus $5.83 per gig. By this formula though, the 32 gig should cost just $258.24. A price of $5.63 per gig seems much more reasonable than $10 a gig. Looking at just the prices on the 8 gig and 16 gig, one gets $105 for the player without memory plus $3.75 a gig for the memory. $3.75 a gig seems very much in line with current flash memory pricing, however by this formula the 2 gig should be priced at $112.50, the 4 gig at $120, and the 32 gig at $225. I told you I was bored!

no, you have a 4gb zen and a 4gb SD card ... even if the card is in the zen they read seperate.
for $119 you could get an 8gb zen at newegg.com though

Last week my wife got me the 4 gb... I really liked it except that I have more than 4g of music and the songs I put on my card (had a 4gb card already)wouldn't go into the general rotation.
So I took it back and got an 8 at ciruit city... for 108 (with coupon)

Well...that would be true IF each player used identical (4gb) units of memory... However, the costs associated with higher density storage per flash chip *usually* reflects a slight premium as you ramp each level to the current max capacity. The caveat here is that as manufactured volumes of higher density chips increases; consumers begin to enjoy the benefits of competition and the lower unit costs generated by optimized manufacturing throughput... the same rules have applied to LCD/Plasma screen TV's , LCD PC monitors, etc. for an example of high cost *bleeding edge* technology look at the current costs of the 64GB flash drives for laptops (and the expected costs of the next gen devices at 128gb, 64gb SD cards, etc).

See what happens when you get a degree in Economics???

Not bad, however I think the 16 gig Zen at $165 is a better deal.
