Default Grey screen when turned ON

Just received an 8Gig Pilot from Overstock / Best Buy Outlet. Everything seems to work OK, except the screen / display.

Frequently, when I turn the device ON, the screen is grey ... no image. The backlight is visible, and it eventually goes off when the screensaver activates. Pressing the MENU button does nothing.

If I reset the device by holding the power switch OFF for 20 seconds or so, then wait five minutes, the next power-up seems normal.

Sometimes, after a normal startup, sliding the LOCK switch to LOCK then UNLOCK causes the same problem. Audio is OK ... but screen is grey.

Has anybody else encountered this problem? Any fix?

Thanks!

Sounds like a dud. This is not normal behavior.

I concure with vferrari.
It sounds like water damage, had a NS-DV that got wet with similar results.

I returned the thing to Overstock, and they refunded my full purchase price.

I like many of the features of the Pilot, and the new price is quite nice. I'd like to get another one, but am worried it will have lockup or screen problems. About what percentage of Pilots have these problems?

It's fairly rare. The chances of you getting another one with this issue are slim to none.

Bought a brand-new 8-gigger (perhaps the last of the breed?)
Works fine.
