Yeah, I think it is safe to say you need a new battery.

Is it possible to upgrade the battery while using the most recent firmware "1.162.02" something like that?

Or would I have to downgrade the firmware in order to take advantage of the better battery options?

Depends on which battery you use. I would go for the OE battery if possible. See here.

Well, its the battery I already have. But I'm just curious if I can take advantage of the better battery power WITH the most updated firmware.

What better battery power? All the batteries are the same in output; all 3.7V. The batteries with a higher capacity (mA) will give you longer runtime, but those batteries are the same ones that have given people firmware headaches. Like I said, if you want your ZVM to work for sure with the current (latest) firmware installed, the safest way to go is get an OE replacement.

OK, so I bought the 1700 mah (BA20603R79914) from ebay
here

Installed it, loaded 1.41.01 firmware in recovery mode, and it still doesn't work.

It, at one point, appeared to be charging but i unplugged it (after awhile) to see if it would crash, and it did. When I restarted it, it had the usual black plug symbol again. Any ideas as for what to do next?

Or, should i look into getting a 1400 mah from here
or another 1700?

Help?

Your ZVM is crashing? Perhaps you have another issue going on there besides the battery. After all, the the battery worked enough for the firmware to install.

Maybe it's not exactly called crashing, sorry I worded that wrong. When I unplug it, it immediately shuts off, and 'rebuilds' when I plug it back in. Doesn't go to low bat. or anything.
Oh, and i had it plugged in to ac as well, when loading firmware.

Did the new battery work with the firmware before changing to the older firmware for the newer battery? If no power is staying on when unplugging the power, perhaps the battery is not aligning up correctly.

I actually loaded the older firmware before i got the battery in the mail, just as preparation, and i reloaded it in recovery mode after I couldn't get it to work.

Well, like I mentioned, that is an over-sized battery. If power is cutting out when unpluging AC power, perhaps the battery's contacts are not aligned properly.

Personally, I would get a different battery. I always recommend the OE battery.

Like I said, I would go with the OE SKC battery if you can. Good luck!

Yea, and the OE will fit better than the one I have, it's rather thick.
*Goes off to ebay!*
YAY!
Found one, from gadget doctor, for $9!
Thanks for your help with this, even if it didn't end up working, lol.
Hopefully the next one works properly.

First, thanks to all who post and administer these fora. I have been visiting for a while and have found the information invaluable.
As regards the battery replacement, I have a ZVM 30gb running 1.62.02.
If I replace this with 1.41.01 to install the 1700 mAh battery, what if any functionality am I giving up?
Thanks!

You can try to make sense of the description for each firmware release here to see if that helps.
