Do you drag n drop or use the software to transfer mp3s? If you use the software does it compress the mp3s? Maybe losing sound quality in the process?

You can upload music both in UMS mode (drag n' drop) or MTP mode (WMP).

I never used any software to get stuff onto my players - that's the whole point of UMS!

But from what I've heard, the Jetaudio software of Cowon doesn't recompress the audio if you don't want it to.

What Noam said only works for certain firmwares on the X5 - the standard 2.10 firmware doesn't support MTP (I think you need 2.09 or 2.11 beta).
