Thanks for the replies Mikerman & dfkt.
Hopefully between the time I'm able to track a v1 down, the official release will have dropped. In the meantime, I'll try finding a secret decoder ring and hopefully the install process will become blatantly evident. If not, it will have been one grand experiment and a few dollars lost. Hopefully I'll eventually be able to wrap my head around the process.

No secret decoder ring here, for you. I can't see the official release being too awfully far away, although only those heavily involved with the process of this build would know. Right now, building your bootloader from source can damage or brick your player. And the Clip cannot recover from bricking, AFAIK. Just a little longer.

That would be nice. Given the amount of progress at the end of last year/beginning of this, I'm kinda surprised there's been no release yet. (Of course, I'm pretty ignorant to all the issues, unfortunately ...)

dfkt, can you still play drm'ed files on your Clip, even after you've flashed Rockbox?

Yesterday i managed to compile rockbox and bootloader with the help of great guys on #rockbox. Well rockbox runs really nice on the clip, but playback is still stopping randomly and only rebooting helps, hope they will solve this in the near future except from that everything runs great. It can even display album covers ( on a clip screen ) and a it contains a great search tool that i really missed on the OF.

Haha, I really don't know, I don't have any DRMed files, or ever even used MTP on my Clip.

Yep, I rarely do, but have some (free) Audible books and would prefer to not lose the ability to play them on a converted Clip.

In case it wouldn't work, you could always convert them to MP3s. Should save you all the hassle.

Yep - that's the only problem I'm having too. I just love having gapless on my little Clip.

Hello, I wanted to give you some news of the rockbox Clip port

First, a note for users of 8GB (and more if they exist) models : current rockbox can brick your player definitely, a fix for these models is in the works and just needs testing before it can be committed.

This page also lists the items needed before a release can happen.

Also it has been confirmed than using rockbox definitely kills your player ability to play DRM'd files, even after a reformat.

Funman, thank you very much for the update, as to current possible brick issues on 8gb and up players (I actually had reported that issue here earlier), and the DRM issue. I generally avoid asking the perpetual status question, but it's good to hear the status every now-and-again (especially when the work has seemed so promising since late last year/early this year). And although the Rockbox pages report status matters, sometimes a posting helps fill it out.

Thanks, and of course you're right--I just was trying to avoid that extra step (Audible uses iTunes to record its books to MP3 form, and I try to avoid iTunes--it seems to want to do things its way rather than to ask me what to do ...), and I always prefer avoiding the elimination of a player's capabilities (even something like DRM playing ability, and even though I never purchase DRM'ed music and the only few DRM'ed audiobooks I have came as free promotions)--nice to keep the options open, if possible ...

• Default status bar
• Track number + title tag (falls back to file name if no metadata is present)
• Artist tag (falls back to folder name if no metadata is present)
• Album + year tag (falls back to blank line if no metadata is present)
• Progress bar
• Elapsed/total/remaining time of track
• Bitrate/codec/sample frequency info
• Peak meter

Very similar to a WPS I did for my iRiver hard drive player--shrunk to about 25% the space! Nice job. I also used alternating lines for the album line and bitrate line, to display playlist name (if any) and genre.

Seems risky Maybe I'll try until I have someone confirming that it works!

EDIT: I had to try, I was too anxious. I managed to get the fw running smoothly

To flash your clip, just drag and drop the m300a.bin file on to the root of the player, but don't put the .rockbox folder on yet. unplug and let it refresh. replug and drag the .rockbox folder and your done.

hmm, i really want to try it but i don't want to break the player... it is my only player at the moment
