It is hard to say. It could be just as it says and a reformat will do it. It might require a hew hard drive which you can get on ebay for under $100. If someone had opened it up and damaged the flex that connects the hard drive to the PCB it presents a real problem. There could also be a component problem on one of the PCB boards or maybe the firmware needs to get flashed over. Anyway it is a crap shoot.
