Default P3 Or P2?

I've read several similar threads but I'm still torn. I'm motivated to ask because Best Buy (USA) currently has the 8GB P2 for $152, so within a couple of bucks of the anticipated 8GB P3 price.

I will be using the player I pick primarily for video viewing, although some music and radio listening as well.

The P3 looks slick, and the UI looks interesting, but I'm looking for some feedback from real users. Are the 'non-essential' "gimmicks" (widgets, etc.) of the P3 worth waiting for, or should I snag a P2?

Wish there was an official US street date for the P3 as I'd snag the P2 to get a feel for it, and then return for the P3 if warranted.

TIA for any advice!

Video? Definitely the P3 then, no conversion required for alot of formats, take a look at this thread. http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum...ad.php?t=40715

Thanks, saw that link to the list of supported formats and resolutions but can't get to it from work.

The videos I watch are primarly shows I record via a TV tuner card on my PC, which I believe are MPEG2 files, so I have a scheduled task that runs over night that converts them to WMV to copy to my Creative Zen.

So, I don't think I'll be able to just drag and drop the source MPEG2 files but maybe there is an easier way to convert them to a format the P3/P2 supports then what I'm doing now.

MediaCoder has a nice extension that I frequently use on the P2.

So just to get used to the P2/P3 way of life, should I snag the P2 on sale, get familar with stuff and then return it within the 30 days when the P3 has hopefully come out?

If you can get away with that... The P3 is a big improvement on the P2.

I'll probably end up just waiting for the P3. For me video is big and the P3 will be the new standard for native video support, I was just tossing around getting used to the touch interface in general since my past and current players are not touch screen.

Wish they would release more specific details about the actual date of release.

I can't believe it's still not out in the U.S.

With the firmware update, the native divx support is huge. Saves a lot of encoding time in the long run.

Keep in mind that you can buy the P3 from UK retailers and then just pay the shipping to get it here

Anyone actually done that? If it wasn't a huge price premium I'd consider it. I'd be curious what the currency conversion + shipping would price out to.

as long as the US of A doesnt charge too much in terms of customs fees, you can get away with $205-210 including shipping.. the actual player costs 129.99 for 16GB on Amazon.. shipping might be about 10 quid more..

No worries now. Got my 16GB from Fry's yesterday. I'll post my thoughts on it this weekend.

No. The P3 is not firmware compatible with the P2. You'll want the P3 as it has better graphics processing, Flash support, and better media codec support.

You can get one now from B&H Photo/Video.
