Default Samsung P3 or Cowon S9 ...

Aaarrgghh!!!!
Can't make up my mind...

Samsung P3 or Cowon S9...

For me it all goes down to : Should I sacrifice longer battery life for built-in speaker.

Right now I'm more leaning to P3 because of its look, but I still can't make up my mind because of its battery life. Looks like S9 has so much better battery life.

I have the same dilemma, but I am leaning towards the p3 because of the speaker, looks and price.

Its tough. I had the same problem. Here is the way I saw it:

Advantages for P3:
- Cheaper
- H.264 support
- Built in speaker

In just about every other area, I think the S9 edges out the P3. EG - Longer battery life, better UCIs, better screen, more power. But in each category, the S9 only just beats the P3, it doesn't do anything exceptionally better. Just a little better. You have to ask yourself two questions;

Are any of those aforementioned three P3 advantages important to me?

Is it worth paying a premium for a product that's just that little bit better?

For me personally I am surprised how much I use the speaker, like when I'm cooking the kitchen and just want a few songs to keep me company. Also there is loads of h.264 content online now (because of iPods) and its become my favourite codec to rip DVDs to. And considering I just pre-ordered the 32gb P3 for only a few pounds more than a 16gb iPod Nano (shudder) for me it seems a relatively easy decision.

See how I started off being all objective and then melted into bias? Sorry, but the P3 rocks. But hey, the S9 does too. Consider both, buy one, either way you go I'm sure you'll be happy.

I'm kind of in the same boat...can't decide what to get.

I was leaning toward the S9 but then I heard the fm tuner was not so great and the player felt cheap (some don't agree). On top of that I'm not sure I want to go with a brand that's not real saturated in the US. For some reason I'm just not comfortable with it. That said I would love to have that screen on the S9.

@Blahaha Buy a P3- if you don't like it, return it and get an S9. One thing, there is a good S9 resource on Abi with firmware advice, uci's, support etc.
I haven't yet heard anyone disappointed in their P3 or S9. Only a couple who maybe hadn't spent enough time with them.

I didn't do any research on the P3 at all- just bought it when it came out here..And I appreciate it more and more.. Probably with the better cans. It never leaves the house, and I've found myself staying up all night listening to just one more album.
I never felt that way about my D2- SQ notwithstanding (I prefer Samsung's sound) - I just wanted rid of it.

I've got both now.
I prefer the S9's screen. It is simply larger and does better color reproduction.
I prefer what the P3's Bluetooth can do.
The P3's UI give you more choices, and is ultimately more efficient.
The S9 appears to be more user customizable. Matters if you have any complaints about it's existing apps.
The P3 is thinner. The S9 feels better in my hand.
The P3 is almost exactly the same weight as the S9: 79g(P3) vs 78g (S9)
The P3 plays MP4 movies and AAC music files.
The S9 plays FLAC, OGG, and APE music files.
The P3 has RDS support with FM radio with EU country code.
Both sound great.
The P3 has a little better photo app.

Really a tough call, isn't it Olley. Both players each have their own great features.

I'll agree. Codec support should be the decider. Coming from an iPod a person is likely to have AAC and MP4 files which the P3 will play. Music lovers will appreciate the FLAC, OGG, and APE codecs the S9 supports. My S9 does a better job with uncompressed WMA files than the P3 does, including playing them over bluetooth. My P3 choked on them over bluetooth, and stuttered with them when something as simple as the backlight turning off occured.

All I rock is MP3's, as they're universally accepted. Solves all my probs, and I really can't tell the difference above a 192kbps mp3 or flac file anyways.

Whichever player I choose, I still have to do file conversion. Cause 99% (if not 100%) of my video files are FLV, downloaded from YouTube.
Neither of these players, unfortunately, support FLV.

I always downloaded straight from YouTube and throw right on the P3. Use Firefox add-on called DownloadHelper...takes any YouTube video in 20 seconds or less. Just drag and drop from the output folder of DownloadHelper to the Video folder of the P3.

In a half hour you can stack up a healthy dose of YouTube videos on it...

Olley, doesn't the P3 play FLAC and OGG too? I don't have any but I've read that since day one....maybe it doesn't work properly is why you state that?

Fenida, I returned my P3 just recently and I'm going to try out the S9 to see how it is in a few months. Bluetooth phone-pairing, immaculate FM radio reception, build-quality, etc. is P3's strong suite. I think in the end when you spit out $200 you deserve a better screen and video experience. It beats up on the majority of 1.8-2.5 inch players but starts to look different next to good video players.

It's not worth double the price of a Q2 to me, S9 seems to have enough difference to possibly justify the expense.

Never did get to do the P3 vs. BlackBerry playing movies video...it is shameful to see.

It did sound great though

Edit to add - great sound was with headphones....not the built-in speaker.

So when you downloaded those videos, the file type is not FLV?
I'm confused.
I usually download YouTube with RealPlayer. The file type is FLV. I know P3 doesn't support FLV.

When I click on DownloadHelper at a YouTube video page usually 3 video options pull up. One .flv and the other two just have the title name, one of those having HQ in front of title name. Its for the highest quality available, HD or otherwise. Those two with title names are good for iPods and P3's. Very fast and very easy....same quality as your desktop or laptop shows.
