Enjoying the Sport
I just picked up an "As-Is" 2gb blue Sport on Ebay for $10 shipped. Just wanted to use it as a micro-SD reader since I've had 3 dedicated card readers die on me in the last month. It actually sounds quite nice. I like the size of it too.
I opened the back (which is not easy without scratching it up a bit) and looked under the battery into the guts of the thing. It appears to be just an updated version of the other insignia that was found to be made by iRiver. It had a newer version of the same Telechips SOC, and CoreMagic memory. I couldn't get at the DAC/amp section without taking the entire assembly apart, which I was too lazy to do. But I'll repeat that I think the thing sounds pretty nice. I especially like that it plays WMA lossless.
If anyone needs a really cheap expandable player, one of these off ebay for under $20 plus an 8gb microSD for under $20, >$40 total for a good sounding small 10gb or maybe 12gb player (if you got the 4gb version). That would be hard to beat.
