I can't seem to justify what's so exciting about the zune HD. Yeah it looks nice but it's got no customizable eq or bluetooth capability, and ive read the sound quality sounds like apple's crap.

It's possible there is nothing about the Zune HD that will remain exciting after the joy of opening a birthday present wears off. That's true of ever player though. No matter how fancy the UI is, that eye candy wears off in a week or two if not sooner. There was a time in my life though that growing my music collection was the joyous thing. Every new LP, cassette, or CD was new eye candy and an audio treat. The LPs were the most fun with big art, lyrics, and often some background info on the artist or band. That's where the Zune HD may indeed have some legs. It's the Zune Pass. After you're bored from the fancy animations and the new images and data it will bring in for your current songs, there's another several million songs with artist and background info to bring a little joy into your life through the Zune HD. I'm hoping there will be songs that lead to music videos that lead to live concerts streaming over the web to any of my Zune HD, XBox and HDTV or PC screen.

Out of the headphone jack maybe. Have you heard of Line out? With it you can hook up and DAC/Amp and it sounds really good. This setup basically bypasses the shitty sound chip.

Is there a brand selling DAP's with dedicated line-outs these days? Besides Archos I haven't seen one since Creative's Nomad Jukebox days. That was almost 10 years ago. All other options required using hacked up cables to use pins on the data connector meant for speaker docks and the like.

I don't think so anymore. There are some for iPod, but that's about it.

Sounds like a little fear that the similar-but-wifi'ed Zune HD has already one-upped their M1. That, and they're mad that they gave MS a great deal on the OLED screens because they didn't think MS would sell many.
