That could be true but IMO its still a rather pointless design feature. But who knows maybe the outer wheel actually has a functional purpose. I'll just have to wait and see.

Now that I better understand the Sony 'alphabet soup' nomenclature I think I definitely want one of the A840s to toy around with. Not sure I'd get it before I pick up the revised Archos 5, but this one's on the list even if Sony never officially brings it to N.A.

DO wish that they hadn't switched over to the Mickey controller, though. Don't care for the design and its function much on the S545; the square control on my A829 is far better in feel and use.

Not sure that it's a design "feature" per se, but merely a swath of "beauty" trim. Like chrome on a car. Lipstick on a pig. Some product designers feel like they must make their creations look 'prettified', ya know...tart the sucker for some ill-conceived bling effect...that sort of BS rubbish.

it also comes with the revolutionary S-Master amp..hope it will give the same SQ as that of X series.

the S639 only goes up to 16gb, I need a minimum of 32gb and the x series is not an option.

Yep this may be the one, either that or just pack it in and get a 16gb s series. I wouldn't go to japan to buy this thing though, not worth the 16 hour flight :P The mickey mouse button are bleh, but who cares, its news your probably going to get from sony for a while unless the x series drops to 200 bucks even.

Anyone got a for sure release date???

offtopic: I bet sony will sell more of these in europe than in japan. Even though sony has to be nice because home is where the heart is.

Got a 64g a840 here in Tokyo and am very much in love. Looks and sounds great (almost too good! with some nice Bose headphones I can hear every crackle from badly ripped .mp3's ^_~ ) and drop and drag is a breeze in My Computer.

My bad Japanese is enough to get through the menus and I've actually decided that it adds to the 'exoticness' of the thing lol.

All in all an amazing looking and sounding player, highly recommended

maybe (probably!) your Japanese is better than mine -- am i able to transfer playlist to it without using SonicS.?! - and does it have/support MTP mode! i'm supper frustrated right now 'cause i only use playlist -- any feedback\sugg. you can offer would be much appreciated!! thanks in advance...

/gulp - you're gonna be mad at me but I'm afraid I don't use playlists! I'm more of an albums person and I still burn compilation CDs about once a year with my favourite songs. Have been doing it since high school, so tragically old school lol.

Therefore I'm not the best person here to ask about this but here's what I know:

- It comes bundled with the Japanese Sonic Stage on it's hdd so you can try going through that.
- There's a playlist option under the music menu so they're definitely there, I'm just not sure about importing them without SS
- I've just searched the .pdf of the manual for references to MTP but didn't find anything...

I'm no authority on any of these things so I'm happy to be proven wrong!

The A840 is only in Japan.
