Actually it's not. The rar file it's self can't be a virus, it can however hold a virus.

If you actually read the article, you will see where they say that the person unpacks the archive and runs the executable file (which is the virus).

"Once opened, the archive typically contains an executable file with a double extension, such as "foto.jpg.exe." The viruses themselves are new and are usually droppers that install a Trojan or back door on the users"

So as you can see, the archive itself (.rar) cannot be a virus. Which is what the original statement was. Nothing says you can't pack ANY archive with virii whether it's rar, zip, 7z, arc, ace, tar etc etc etc. The archives themselves cannot be virus because they don't actually run anything. They are mearly a container.

The point the article is talking about is most ascanners don't scan in rar archive, but do zip archives. So virii are getting past scanners this way.

A user still has to run an executable file regardless. Which has nothing to do with the container. The container is just letting it get by some scanners currently.

Nowadays all decent virus scanners scan inside RAR archives, that Slashdot article from 2005 is a bit delayed fearmongering...

1) I scanned it with my avira and it says it isnt a virus
2) I playd them on my pc and i think that some of them wont work and some of them will

Let me clear this all up for you guys. You were wrong, Electron, the RAR file itself cannot contain a virus, though it's contents can. The ONLY game that runs a tiny bit slow is Battlefield 2 when you move left it will lag a tiny bit. So, no virus, please stop with this virus thing, it's really annoying. ALL THE GAMES WORK. I'm not even joking. All this spam about virus nonsense is soooo annoying. Just play it and ejoy! Oh my gosh.

Thanx, I didn't even catch the date. I did think it odd that it claimed most scanners don't scan inside rar files, being both AVG and Avira have in my own experience. But I didn't clue in.

I just wanted to debunk the fear tactic that rar files themselves were infectious.

I hope I was clear in sharing that you don't have to fear looking into any archive file. You just have to be wary running the contents of an archive.

*GAMEPACK NEWS* I have been PMed that some problems occur with the fishtank. After awhile it is said to restart the P3 after freezing it. I tested it, Sorry it's true Got Games Pack 2 is Valid to come out In January. Or quiker. I'll start working on it now
