If your Zen is not responding or in a "reboot loop" the following information from creative explains how to access the players recovery mode
Hope this helps, and good luck. Zen V Plus and Zen V 1. Detach your player from the PC if it is connected, and turn off the player. If the player stops responding, you can reset the player. To reset the player, gently insert a thin object into the Reset hole located below the power switch. 2. Press and hold the Play button while powering on your player. 3. When the player displays the Creative logo, release the Play button. It will display the following options: Clean Up Scans the player and removes invalid links from its music library. Does not affect music files themselves. Format (All) Caution! Erases all content! Save a copy of your player's content before formatting. Reload OS/ Firmware Caution! Erases your player's firmware. DO NOT select the Reload Firmware option unless you have access to a PC and you have downloaded the necessary firmware to install. Reboot Reboots the device. I have a Zenv plus 4G and I do not see how to save files from my player to my computer attempts to copy and paste are unsuccessful. I particularly want to record voice to my player and then save to my computer to use its bigger HD memory. Also to save content to the computer if i need to format the player for any reason.

Have you installed the software that came with it.

i have installed the software and now with the help of iTunes have managed to save files to computer though it took me some time to discover the way. I find that the built in microphone is not very sensitive for meetings and I think an external preamp microphone attached to the line in would help. I haven't found a suitable microphone /supplier. Any suggestions?

Hi, this post was very useful, however I have a problem with the reset hole.
My zen v plus got frozen last week, then I reset it; all ok. But, yesterday it got frozen again and the reset did not work. In fact, the needle I used entered almost all into the hole. Please help me, What can I do to reset my player. |

You need to use something a little thicker than a needle, such as a paper clip or an earring stud. With the needle, you were probably missing the actual button entirely.

Thank goodness for the reset button!! I purchased a 2gb v plus from a pawn shop, without a booklet, and have pretty much figured it out on my own. I have been able to hook up to Windows Media Player to reorganize and add music to my player.
On the other hand, I would not recommend this to anyone with larger or less nimble fingers than I. The menus are easy to navigate, if only you can get the buttons to respond. Very frustrating. However, the features offered and the price I paid for it well make up for its size. |

Minivanmom, you might want to verify that your new player has the latest firmware available, as this might address the unresponsive-button issue you're having. Firmware updates are surprisingly easy - you just download the firmware file from Creative's website, plug in your player, and double-click the downloaded file. It's that easy.

is this recovery mode the same as pulling the battery on a ZMP and putting it back while holding the power slider thingy? like it does all the same things?

Since the two players are substantially different in terms of internal hardware, I would not advise that. At best, it won't work. At worst, you'll brick your player.

I have an important question about recovery mode. There's a handy feature called Clean-Up looks a bit innocent but it defrags all media uploaded to player. If there are quite a long pauses between tracks while skipping or shuffling CleanUp fixes it significantly, especially when you use album art. Same applies to creating thumbnails of your photos. But CleanUp function also resets settings to factory settings. That means Zen V will lose wallpaper, name of the owner, custom EQ, menu configuration, all remembered FM stations and their names
. I don't see any config file while browsing the player is there any way to store my own settings??

Yes, Clean-up will reset all user settings back to factory default (this is to clear any errors that could be caused by user settings). The only thing I can suggest is write down all your settings before doing a cleanup.

Flippo, when you pressed reset was the player connected to the PC with USB cable?
Quote:
1. press reset with a paper clip in the Reset hole "while connected to the back USB port of the PC or while charging". I did that and it worked. So the player needs to be PC connected, not disconnected.

I have had my Zen V plus for about 9 months now, and suddenly it wont boot past the ZEN v plus screen. In fact I can't get it to boot up at all accept when I plug it into the charger, or a usb cable, then it hangs at Zen V plus. I have to hit the reset button to get it to shut off. I've never booted into recovery mode before, but nothing seems to happen when I hold down the play button. It just boots as normal, then hangs on the Zen V plus screen like always. The computer wont recognize it when I plug it in with the USB chord since it doesn't complete the bootup... I have tried reseting it numerous times, holding the reset button down, holding the play button down durring bootup, nothing seems to be working for me. Any suggestions?
