Hi,
I have the YP-P3 (32GB) since June and I was very happy with it. I have always used it in the UMS modus (I even do not have amodio installed, nor I will), and it was working just fine. Yesterday I wanted to transfer some new stuffs on the player, I have plugged in the PC and: nothing! I mean the player starts charging but that's it: no reaction whatsoever from the computer side, like I would have not have plugged anything in it! The player itself works just fine, just no way to let the computer see it. I have tried with different computers and different OS (1 PC WinXP SP2 (the one normally I use), 1 laptop WinXP SP2, 1 PC suse linux, 1 PC Win7): same thing .. no reaction at all! I have tried to press the player hard reset button/hole (see manual): nothing has changed (appropo: it does not seem to me that the reset does anything: it I press it with player off, it just stays off, if I press it with the player on it just turns itself off: is this the expected behavior?). Any suggestion???? |

Try using a formatting tool and format it completely (into FAT32), then copy/paste a new firmware file (downloaded from Samsung's website) onto it. Sometimes, even if the OS doesn't seem to recognize it, it will still show up in a formatting tool.
Don't know about Windows, but this works for me in Linux on drives that refuse to... work.

you are probably right, but it is a bit of a drastic solution. Being my player still in grantee before I format it I would rather send it to repair. Any other ideas?

Well yeah, sending it in to repair is always first. Forgot to include that in that post, lol.
One thing you could do is plug it back into the Linux one, then find a terminal somewhere and type 'lsusb' and post the response. That will show if the OS is recognizing the player is there and just not doing anything or not.

I have plugged again in a Win7 too and I had a look to the "Device manager". There is no extra device pupping up when I plug the device in either recognized, nor "unknown". I even let the "device manager" do an extra scan (Actions --> "scan for devices" or similar), but nothing has happened. |

Silly question, but have you tried a different cable? They do fail sometimes...

This is one of my guess too, the problem is that I do not have another cable!
This is one of the few things I do not like in the player: the USB cable with a proprietary plug, and since I do not have any other samsung player with the same plug ... I can not test it :-( |

There some cable you can buy for this.
And micro usb is on the requierment list for my next pmp. |

Make sure the USB cable is plugged all the way into the computer. I tend to do that a lot and the computer will not see the P3 even though the P3 says it is charging.

I doubt that after this much trial and error he has failed to plug the cable in correctly at least once....
It is unfortunate that you don't have access to another cable, I would suggest you buy another one, though if it is not the culprit you will be out even more money then when you started.

Yeah, he's claimed to have plugged it in to several different computers all running different OS's.
But I agree with sassafras, getting a new cable should probably be your best bet. You could probably order a cheap accessory kit off of Amazon that includes one, and that will also come with a bunch of other cheap stuff to use it with. If all else fails, an RMA is in order...
