Default Newzild's $200 Challenge - your best bang for the bucks

We all want the best player, the best amp, the best headphones or earphones - but not all of us are millionaires.

When my old Sansa e270 player and Etymotic Research ER-6i cans got stolen a few weeks ago I set myself a budget of US$200 to assemble some new kit. This is what I managed:

Player: Sandisk Sansa Fuze 8GB (from Yongsan Electronics Market) US$72
Cans: Future Sonics Atrio M8 (from ebay.com) US$95
Case: Clear crystal case (from Yongsan Electronics Market) US$4
Amp: Fiio E5 (from dealextreme.com) US$17.41
Memory: Kingston 4GB MicroSDHC (from Yongsan Electronics Market) US$9

Total cost: US$197.41

I'm pretty pleased with this kit - I'm getting some great sounds for the price.

Can anybody top this? What's the best setup you can manage for US$100, US$200 or US$300? Please reply!

Good cheer,
Newzild

If all I had was the $300, I'd go over budget by $3.87 by skipping lunch and get:

Refurb Clip v1 running rockbox, untill + is rockboxable (buy.com): $14.99
Sennheiser IE 8 (Amazon market place): $288.88

Dude, it looks very similar, but I can't be sure it's the same. I bought my case here in South Korea, and my one was Korean-made. Coincidentally, the Atrios are also Korean-made, and I had to order those from the US.

Heh, heh. I know what you mean about the cost. I checked out a pair of Sennheiser PX 100 cans last time I was home, and they were NZ$200, which is about twice what they cost in the States.

I'd stick with the 2GB OmniTech thumbdrive player for $20. For headphones, I'd hop in my time machine and buy the Sony V7 'phones again that I got for $35 at a pawnshop (and that I let a friend borrow, who utterly destroyed them). Or just get another pair of the JVC HA-FX33 in-ears, since they're rugged and sound pretty good.

For home listening, I'd plug it in (using a dollar store cable) to the NAD 705 receiver I saved from a scrap metal dumpster, hook it up using the Monster Cable zip cord from the BFM thrift store (75 cents) to the Mission 701 speakers ($24.95 from Value Village).

Worst portable buys I ever made: Technics RS686 portable stereo cassette deck with Dolby, $550. Almost the size and weight of a portable VCR. And for headphones, Sony MDR-V900 for about $220. I'm not saying they're bad, but a tad expensive, and probably not as good as the lamented V7's.

I've got a few setups:

For ~$120:

4GB Clip+ ($50)
16GB Sandisk Micro SD card ($50)
Modded Koss KSC75's ($17)

8GB Fuze v2 ($47)
16GB Sandisk Micro SD card ($50)
Modded Koss KSC75's ($17)

For ~$200:

4GB Clip+ ($50)
16GB Sandisk Micro SD card ($50)
Head-Direct RE0's ($100; I bought them before the $80 sale)

8GB Fuze v2 ($47)
16GB Sandisk Micro SD card ($50)
Head-Direct RE0's ($100; I bought them before the $80 sale)

I've got a biosciencegeek cmoy too, but it doesn't provide much benefit (barely any at all) to carrying it around with the Clip+.

Clip+ 8GB (or Rockboxed Clip v1 2GB)
Hippo VB (with Sony Hybrid silicon tips and Phonak PFE silicon ear guides)
---------
Total: A few bucks, and really lovely sound. Doesn't need any silly amp, those two are like made for each other (and my ears).

I really want to get a pair of VB, you always seem to be saying how good they are and i love bass so it should be a nice upgrade to the S4.

I guess my sub $200 is:

$50 - Clip+ 4gb
$50 - 16gb MicroSDHC Card (Dane-Ele,c Class 4)
$75 - Klipsch Image S4
$20 - Fiio E5
