Default Weird random buzz coming from my S544. What could it be?

Every now and then my Sony S544 will let out a loud buzzing noise when I'm listening to music. Scares the pi$$ out of me every time it does it. I know it isn't the song because it seems to happen during different songs and at totally random moments. This just started happening, and I've had the thing for a few months now. Does anyone else have this problem? Or know what I can do about it? Thanks!

That sucks.....haven't heard any buzzes yet from mine. Maybe a reset would help?

I could give that a try. I'd just hate to have to load everything back onto it again =/

I don't think you'll have to. I've only pressed it once, but it didn't erase anything that time.

Hey, I think I may be on the same boat as you. I sometimes hear a short buzzing sound on my S545. It's like a buzzing sound they play on game shows or something. I thought I was being electrocuted the first time I heard it. I get them once in a while. Annoys me. Did that reset help?

I like your Ash icon, BTW <3

burntrat - YES! That's exactly how it is. It's weird and frightening. So far the reset worked.....

I believe it comes from the screen. When the screen brightness is set to 4 it makes a hissing sound. I just changed it to max and no sound.
I also have the same problem with my Samsung monitor. In some brightness levels it makes a weird noise.
Maybe you have changed your brightness to 4 and the reset brought it to the default level (3) again.
and I am disappointed to see such a stupid problem in a Sony product.

That would make sense. But I actually keep my screens brightness down to 1 to conserve battery power

I know what you're referring to.

I have an S-545 (technically identical to a 544) and occasionally, maybe once every two weeks, it will make this loud screeching, shriek for a second at the most in the middle of a song.
Sounds like an disc drive jamming, if you've ever heard that.

I could just be some caching issue or perhaps just static build-up.

I doubt it has anything to do with screen brightness levels, I set my screen to 3 during the night and 5 during the day and it has happens on both levels.

Amar89: Huh...this sounds kind of alarming. While I don't have the S, I do have and love my E. Your posts indicate some great knowledge/experience with the S - but you have no real concern about this phenomenon, which seems to be occurring with some regularity? Have you tried contacting Sony? I for sure would...

Just wondering... :-)

cheers,

I'm pleased to report that I still haven't heard this. *crosses fingers*

Marv, that would be the last thing you need to happen right now...worse than a hole in the head...

Another benefit of having three players......if one was to die, I could still get by! And of course, that would give me an excuse to look at players again....we all can use some "retail therapy" from time to time.

It scared the bejesus out of me when it first occurred, because I thought I was being electrocuted or something

I seriously doubt it's a severe problem, it simply sounds like the firmware has a brief hang-up trying to retrieve data from the cache that takes a little too long to buffer, for whatever reason.
The same thing will happen on your PC running a media player if your buffer size is too small or too large, and you will get the exact same stuttering screech as it loops the remaining bit of audio in the buffer at incredibly high speed.

I mean it could a multitude of reasons, condensation inside the player, too great a temperature change in short of a space of time, not enough buffer space, etc...

I only hear a buzzing noise and it's very quiet when I'm using my headphone amp. No hiss without one though. (As someone said. the Hiss occurs when the screen is turned on. So whenever I switch a song or something). Doesn't really bother me that much

@Rufus: I sure hope you are right and that the phenomenon is simply an annoyance and not a real issue!

cheers!

Yes! That's exactly it. It happens to me daily though, but then again I do listen to music everyday for hours at a time. But now my screen blinks when it does it, which just started happening. It also seems to be happening more frequently, instead of just once a day =/
I've contacted Sony and they told me to try a reset, a reformat, and/or to upgrade my software. All of which I had already done before they even suggested it. When I told them I had already tried it all, they didn't really know how else to help me, other than to send it in to exchange it for a refurbished one, which I have yet to do....
