It should very well be possible to do it, I don't have the source code though, but I think jbob might, above post suggests he at least has modified it once before.

Unfortantly i do not have the source either, however the above post i made from scratch, (as you can tell, i did it before i was actually decent at programming ).
The accelerometer on my app should still work, after all it uses the same code as skifree.

After I tried the first 2 times nothing happened, after the third attempt I had to reset my player

Yes, if you read the last few messages you see that the code is not modified for the latest firmware and may therefore cause problems.
