Default Importing S545

I live in Northern Ireland, and ordered an S545 last week. It arrived and I was rather dissappointed by how much the EU volume cap affected the volume output.

At first I was thinking about buying an earphone amplifier, but I am now going to return my EU version, and order an american model instead.

However, I tried to order one off the american amazon website, but they wont ship to me, does anyone know where I could import a brand new one?

Hi calculus...Sorry you are running into this volume limitation. I have indeed read that this seems to be endemic to some Sony models sold in your neck of the woods.

I cannot help you directly, but I do know of at least 1 ABi member from the EU area who may be able to recommend retailers, both brick and mortar and otherwise.

Hope he/they will see this thread and respond.

Hang in there and cheers,
-lestatar

Thanks very much for your reply.

I found one on amazon.com that ships internationally. It'll cost me an extra 45 over what I paid for my UK one, but for me it's definitely worth it.

I have an old NWZ-S618F which broke down a few months ago and wont connect to my computer at all (which is the reason for buying a new one), but I just couldnt keep the S545 because the comparison between the two volume outputs was ridiculous. It just feels so limp compared to my old one.

Hey Calculus: Am assuming that your S618F is indeed down for the count? No way at all to try and resuscitate it all - hard reboots/reset, etc? It is indeed a steep price you are faced with simply to get a non EU model without the volume issue.

Have you considered other brands? Some fine models are probably available for you locally, possibly Cowon or Sandisk, Samsung?

cheers,

How would I go about doing a hard reboot/reset?

I thought about other brands, but I really love the walkman series' custom EQ.

Was thinking of possibly sacrificing the S545's speakers to save 45 (and the hassle) and getting a used S639FB from the UK Amazon, which would save shipping costs, etc. I did enjoy the speakers on the S545 that I have, but I could probably live without them for the sake of decent earphone volume.

I wish there was a test mode for the S545, I don't really want to have to part with it, I rather like it, but it really is just too quiet. That's the only reason i'd return it, which is a pity.

Calculus: I am unfamiliar with your model Sony S618F, but Google search returns this:

I suppose I have tried resetting it then, didn't help as far as I remember, thanks anyway.

The strange thing is that I connected the S618F to my computer the other night after a few months of not plugging it in, and the computer recognized it for a minute or two, then came up with the usual "USB Device not recognized" message.

I think I read somewhere the other night that its a problem with the transfer protocol or drivers (Which I cant update because it wont stay in long enough for me to update it)

Hmmm, don't intend to give you false hope, but your cause may not be lost just yet. Can you hold off for a few days? There are lots of very knowledgeable folks here and on the Sony forums - it is possible something may be done to bring your device back from the dead...

I would wait until other, much more expert folks to weigh in before committing to new purchase...

cheers,

My 2 walkman players have a pinhole with a reset button....does yours? And from what I hear, the S639 was a pretty awesome player....so maybe it is an option.

Don't hold that against this otherwise fine mp3 player however.

The unrestricted models (i.e. US, although mine is an Australian one and it still raises the roof) are incredibly loud, playing past volume level 13 or 14 will probably shorten your hearing span considerably.
