Default S540 folder.jpg

Does the NWZ-S540 support the "folder.jpg" method of displaying album art or should I just keep using Mp3tag which can increase the file size by quite alot sometimes.

Don't know about the folder.jpg method....it worked on my Fuze, but that was different.

I would suggest continuing the MP3Tag method, just don't make the images bigger than they need to be.

Hey Corby: I have the sister/cousin E series device. The folder structure is definitely present on the E when viewed via MediaMonkey and Winamp, so probably safe to assume it is the same for the S.

However, I cannot confirm whether the folder.jpg method will work, but my guess is yes. Sure someone will chime in on this...

Also, FYI, the E series can successfully display embedded artwork up to 600x600 in pixel size. But i limit the art file size to less than 75k where possible. And I never use the folder.jpg method myself - all my 14k tracks have embedded artwork - i just like it better that way.

cheers and good luck,
-lestatar

Hi, thanks for the help so far, the reason that I'd like to start using the folder.jpg method is that ive recently started using foobar2000 (which is awesome) and that can use the folder.jpg method so I thought that if I could use it on my portable media player aswell as my PC media player it would save alot of hassle.

Just try it with an album or two first, before you go changing everything.

I think a Sony Walkman will only show cover art images sent these 2 ways:

  1. Embedded into an MP3 or AAC/MP4 audio file.
  2. Associated using the MTP abstract album feature.

Just shrink the Album Art down to 350x350/400x400 pixels and make sure it is under 200Kb in size before you add it with an ID3 tag editor, otherwise you will usually have a pause of about 1 or 2 seconds when loading a new track.

And yes it does increase the size of an .mp3 file. Incredibly large album art can even cut off a few seconds from the start of a track.

Interesting Amar89. Have you actually had this happen? What is "incredibly large album art" in your opinion?

I never knew this to be a fact, but always assumed that it could happen with overly large tag-embedded artwork. Actually, this is one reason why all along, until pretty recently, I never embedded artwork in my mp3 tags - for fear of damaging the files themselves.

Having said that, I have recently taken the plunge and updated all 14k mp3 tracks in my collection with embedded artwork, using image sizes up to 600x600, but never more than around 75k file sizes.

Thus far, all my DAPS display artwork stuff perfectly [an older Zen V+, Sony E and Fuze 8GB v2]...

cheers,
-lestatar

Incredibly large as in, entirely impractical sizes.
If you want to test for yourself, try embedding something like a 1280x1024 or larger .jpeg on a particular track and you may find a few seconds missing from the beginning, not to mention your player will usually take a few seconds to load the song cover art before it actually plays the song.

When an ID3 tag is edited, the .mp3 file has to be "re-saved" with the new attributes, so it is technically "re-compressed" (just as if it's been re-encoded again) and if there is a huge amount of metadata to be save on the ID3 layer it can sometimes cut off portions of the .mp3.

I've found anything over 200Kb in size or 800 pixels square will usually cause my S-545 to take about 2-3 seconds to load the song before it plays it.
