Default can the P3 play Apple Lossless audio files?

All of my CDs are ripped to uncompressed WAV files and stored on my
computer. (roughtly 600GB in total size) In addition, I also have
the majority of those files in Apple Lossless format. At last count,
there's about 85GB in Apple Lossless format. The main reason is that
I use them in my iPod Classic 160GB and iPod Touch 64GB.

My Samsung P3 is arriving soon.... I assume it won't play Apple Lossless
audio files. But why can't it? I can play the Apple Lossless audio files
using VLC player on my netbook(which doesn't even have iTunes ior
Quicktime installed).

What is my best option here? Converting the WAVs to FLACs? (probably
will take a long time to convert... )

FLAC is the only way. I think only ipods play Apple lossless amongst DAPs.

ALAC is for iPod's - ALAC = Apple Lossless Audio Codec, see a trend? All you need to do is convert the ALAC files to another codec, no loss will occur (ALAC>FLAC conversion is lossless to lossless after all).

FLAC is indeed your best option (if the P3 supports it, which I guess it does), it's the most widely accepted and most mature lossless codec out there: http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index....mparison_Table - not that you need a lossless codec on a portable player, since it's only a waste of space and it won't sound any different than a proper LAME MP3 encode or similar...

I agree w/dfkt - lossless on the P3 is overkill. Use a high bitrate lossy codec, as it'd be hard to tell the difference IMO. I personally use LAME V~0 (mp3),..........overkill, but keeps me sane.

you can make m4a (AAC) files with itunes...
if you have a fast processor (2x3000mhz) it will be done very soon....
but you can use wma with 192 kbps... you just need a coverter.. try WinAmp...itīs best....

if you want better quality try OGG with 500 kbps but the files are round about 20 mb

That wasn't the question the OP asked, as they want to play ALAC, not basic AAC.

Now that's just silly! I doubt most people could ABX Q5 or Q6 apart from a lossless file, much less a 500 kbps Q10.

Yes you are right

but you canīt play ALAC on your p3... it is not possible....
because of this you have to convert this files in an other format that could be played by the p3...
if he use itunes anyway he could convert the files to m4a which is playable by the p3...

you MUST convert this files because you NEVER get them played....

sorry for the work you may have now....

@Carsten: The OP knows this, but this wasn't the issue,......................... OR the question,................. read the first post and leave it alone.

Anyways, to the OP - convert to LAME V~0, you'll never notice a difference on the P3, and you'll have a major surplus in space. Or just go w/FLAC if it's something your dead set on,...............& keep us posted please.

Really? I can hear a difference, personally. Though, I can't hear a difference with everything.

Particularly with one album, Vargstenen by Manegarm. In any MP3 codec, there's a hissing noise. In FLAC, there isn't. Another big difference is Agalloch - Ashes Against The Grain. There's a few others, too. God Is An Astronaut has so much more depth in lossless.

you, too??
i hear differences, too, because i use wma lossless and some of my songs are in m4a because my little brother has an iPod and they donīt play wma anyway......
and all my songs are ripped form audio CDs so there is a big different between the format... adn mp3 is for me the worsest format ever, because in the songs in this format are missing some sounds... you can even hear this with the earphones came with the p3.....

and...another question...does the p3 play uncompressed wav (PCM)
