Default Music Sync Software

I'm aware of the Content Transfer Software, located here: http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu...=5295&os_id=42

but I was wondering if there were any alternatives. What do you guys use to sync your music?

MediaMonkey is great. Winamp is better for me on my Sony E series.

Both run rings around the included Sony Content Transfer software IMO...

This is another vote for MediaMonkey (MM). I use it to sync my music to my player and once set up it works well with my player.

I have used Content Transfer (CT) to load files on my player, but I found it to be a great deal of work since I have to use other programs (such as Windows Explorer and MP3Tag) to add features that CT lacks (such as playlist creation, and ID3 tag editing).

I now have Windows 7 and am using wmp12. I have found wmp to be the most friendly connection with the walkman in terms of updating playlists etc.

I had read that wmp12 would not sync the actual itunes m4a files (i.e that it would convert to wma first). This may have been posted before but if not I have found a reasonably easy way around that if anyone is interested

Believe it or not I have tried everything - all software listed and discussed here and many more. wmp is the only one that consistently played nice with my walkmans. All other ones had one issue or another. playlists for use when running!

But what if the playlists contain silly songs and comedy bits? Such as the following:

- "The Ministry of Silly Walks" by Monty Python
- "The Best Day Ever" by Spongebob SquarePants
- "Rubber Duckie" by Ernie
- "The Cat Came Back" by [Found more than 30 versions during a quick check]
- "Silly Love Songs" by Wings
- "The Alphabet Song" by The Three Stooges
- "Witch Doctor" by The Music of David Seville

I just purchased a S545 a couple of days ago, after using a Sandisk e260 with Rockbox on it for the last four years. I'm very particular about how my information is formatted, and didn't like how using Explorer to do the transfer hid the date tag. I say hid and not deleted because checking with MP3Tag after copying the file from the player back to the computer revealed the date tag with the date in it, just as it should be.

Anyway, I went off on a slight tangent. As I was saying, I'm very particular about how my music is tagged. As soon as the file is downloaded or the songs ripped from a CD MP3Tag is running and the tags fixed up in the way I like them. Then and only then are they eligible to go into my music library.

So, since I take care of the tagging before the files get near my library, I have no need of programs like MediaMonkey or WinAmp. The Content Transfer software is all I need since it doesn't hide the date tag like Explorer. Obviously I am not the norm and the aforementioned programs will in fact work better than what Sony provides. If I wasn't so methodical and thorough in my tagging I'd be using one of the aforementioned programs instead of the Content Transfer software.

Hey Strephon: I think you will find that you are not alone in being so methodical with your tags - I am the same way, have been for a decade at least, and I can think of several other folks here who are equally organized... :-)

My process is essentially the same as yours - nothing gets added to my library until they go through mp3tag. Once all the tags and the artwork/comments are exactly as I want them, I do an extra step: I mark all of the mp3 files as READ-ONLY.

Only at this point will I move the mp3 files over into my central music folder. Then I have both MediaMonkey and Winamp update their respective dbs by rescanning. Takes me a few minutes each, but the end result for me is that both Winamp and MediaMonkey show the same file count in their libraries and are always in sync.

I mark all my mp3 files read-only to prevent either of these apps from making any unauthorized changes to my tags/files.

I use both because MediaMonkey doesn't quite display my Sony E properly for me. Winamp does this perfectly so I use it to copy music to the E and also to create/delete/modify my E playlists. My Year tags all appear perfectly on my E - I suspect that this is largely the result of my marking my files read-only, but I have no way to verify this.

This process works flawlessly for me. I don't even know what the Sony Content Transfer software looks like. :-)

Perhaps the addition of marking the mp3 files read-only could work in some way for you, allowing you to enjoy the terrific library management features/players built into Winamp and MediaMonkey.

cheers!

I've had my files read-only for years, after WMP tried to make changes.

Given what I mentioned regarding date tags on Classical music in my other thread, I'll have to give WinAmp a go, because while I could understand the Classical music not carrying date tags < 1900 because WMP acts the same way, I had a Bill Cosby album from 1986 transfer with no date tag. This means the Sony software IS the source of my problems, and not the firmware as I initially thought.

Strephon: Have you checked your other thread yet, the one specifically about <1900 year tags?

You will be very happy... :-)
