Default Will I see a huge decrease in battery performance if...

...I play songs that are over the average 128 kbps? I'm not sure how that works.

I have the s545 model by the way.

There may be some difference but I doubt it will be huge. For the love of music, plz use something higher than ~128, your ears will thank you.

You will see a decrease, but it shouldn't be drastic.

Actually, the decrease in battery life can be fairly substantial, depending on your mp3 bitrates.

From the S545 manual, battery life at 128kbps mp3 files is stated to be ~42hours. In real life, if you encode at 192 or better VBR LAME, I would surmise that you will probably see 33-35 hours - a little less if you use EQ on top of that.

My guess above is based on my own usage of at least V2 LAME mp3 [and sometimes 320CBR....yeah, yeah, I know] on my E345.

The E345 manual states that at 128kbps, one can expect ~30 hours playback. In real life, with my bitrates above, I get more like 23-25 hours, with EQ.

This is more than satisfactory for me. But yes, on paper, the decrease in battery life on the S/E is significant. But again, this depends on how you personally define "huge".

Also, of course, constant fiddling with the controls [which cause the screen to light up] will also have a detrimental impact.

The S545 is a very fine player - enjoy it!
