Zune software update released today. Just updated it.
- Software version number remains the same, - No discernible changes - No comment from MS (zune support refused to expand). Can only assume that the updates timing MUST be related to preperations for the upcoming "nodo" WP7 update. Getting closer? Maybe. (copy of post in Zune section - relevant for this sub-forum for people that may not visit the Zune Marketplace/Software forum).

Ahhh....a wpcentral <source> report now shows this MS Help kb on the topic of WP7 backups:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2498092 excerpt: When you try to update Windows Phone 7, the Zune software may stop responding during the backup process. The Windows Mobile Device Updater is not up to date. You will have to update the Windows Mobile Device Updater (ZuneWmdu.dll) component of the Zune software to version 4.7.1407.0 or later versions. This software update is intended for use with Zune 4.7 software and is covered by the terms in the Zune 4.7 End User License Agreement (EULA). Things become clearer....a bug fix clearing the path for backups as part of the update process!

Ouch....
http://www.neowin.net/news/exclusive...medium=twitter Neowin reporting multiple sources quoting MAR 8 WP7 update! the update has been delayed due to last minute changes by Microsoft and/or OEMs. The update must then be tested by carriers for two-three weeks prior to launch. Previous rumored release dates pinned February 7, or sometime around the date of Mobile World Congress (February 14th). Apparently, Microsoft is set to reveal the date officially at Mobile World Congress, but will not make it available at that time. Damn!

That sucks. Hopefully the release is smooth though. Im ok with it being pushed back as long as everyone has access to the release immediately, or OTA over a cpl days.

You'll be able to initiate the download via the Zune software once it's released. WP7 doesn't currently support the OTA method, or that is my current understanding. I prefer the manually initiated download anyway.

Just read a report with first hand knowledge that it is the fault of the OEMs and the carriers. Supposedly the update might have even been complete by the end of 2010.

Quote:
Microsoft basically makes the update, then gives it to all of the OEMs to make their device-specific changes, then it goes back to Microsoft to roll these changes into one update, then to the carriers for their tweaks, then back to MS to push out.
