Can't reload firmware

I cannot reload firmware. It is connected to the computer, no hub, no other usb devices present. I keep loading the executable file i downloaded and it keeps telling me that the device is not connected. it is connected. i had checked it in device thingie whatever its called i cannot remember what its called but in the device listing in windows 7 i know its listed there but the firmware updater won't detect it at all.
