"Building database...." freezes on Rockbox 3.8

I recently decided to upgrade my Fuze v2 to Rockbox 3.8 because of the embedded album art support, everything went well, until I added a few new albums and refreshed my database. I hit "Initialize Now" for database, I went to Database, and a message showed up and said "Building Database....(some number) found (PREV to return)". My Fuze never gets out of this message......I leave it for a long time and its still the same. Not sure what could be causing this, I checked all my MP3 tags and they're all ID3v2.3.

Does anybody have any ideas? I'd prefer to not use the file browsing since my music files aren't in order.....

My V1 was temperamental yesterday morning as well...enough so that I wanted to revert to 3.7.1 just like some others have done....problem is, I never saved a copy of it on my HDD(it was so stable that I never thought I'd need to restore it, and it never occurred to me to do it before I updated)

Well I'd have no problem switching back to 3.7.1, but then there's no embedded album art and I'd lose all my sound configuration files

I'm pretty sure you can save just your sound .cfg files and apply them to whatever build you load onto the player.

You have another player with a much nicer screen for that, don't you?
Anyway, I am going to try using a current build on the Fuze and see how that works...but since it's my least-used player, I don't have to rush into anything with it.

lol....yes I do, but its still important to me, anyway, I'm installing the archived build now, hopefully that will work.

damn.....even after a reinstall and installation of the archived build I still get the same database bug .....wish I could find a version that actually worked....

McDougal: It also may have corrupt your memory so run chkdisk and see.

Thanks for the link! I am going to try the current build first, but I'll definitely save 3.7.1, just in case....it worked great for me all winter, and I don't lose any sleep over album art not showing.

Yup, seems like something got broke in RB 3.8 for sure...

Huh....just ran a diskcheck under Windows 7 and it reported errors and repaired them successfully....but I'm still getting the same bug.

Maybe I'll reinstall 3.7.1 tomorrow ....

Yup, seems like something got broke in RB 3.8 for sure...

Well, mine wasn't the database issue that McDougal and others are noticing....and the peculiarity it was exhibiting yesterday seems to have vanished.

When I disconnect, if the DB acts like it has for the others, then I'll make it known to the devs.

I think everyone with database problems should turn on metadata logging to find the exact file that's causing the problems. Then upload it and link it on the tracker. It might give the developers a hint as to what is going wrong.

I downloaded the Genesis track from fs#11965 and put it on the released 3.8 r29513 build. I noticed you're using the daily build r29511. The database refreshed with out problems. Reconnecting the fuze to the computer didn't elicit any corrupted file errors.

BTW, I like you're choice in music.

r29513 is newer than v3.8.
But it doesn't matter anyway. The official release and all recent daily builds have this bug, at least on my player. It doesn't even matter if I have an SD card inserted or not.

Just installed the current build r29554 on my Clip+ and the issue is fixed for me. Now both my Fuze and Clip+ don't have the issue.

One of the Rockbox devs gave me a great hint and we were finally able to isolate the database bug:
