Sony S754 with Pics - Have I found the perfect DAP?

i got this today, and yes, I would have chosen a different colour but it was half-price and the only one:




It's smaller than the A, slightly thicker (the A is the same thinness as an iPod Touch), but the buttons are bigger and a lot easier to press. It has a tru-black display versus the A's OLED.







I'm guessing it sounds just the same as the A - it has the same noise cancelling feature and white n/c iems, and the same battery care setting.

But the real killer for me is its 50 hours battery life - that and easier button control plus the fact that it's small and will fit in my pocket.

Yeah, just 8Gb which I don't mind - it forces me to put just stuff I really want on it, like with the i9.

I'd rather have got a different colour, though. Edit: It has 5 on-the-go playlists, at last a Sony with playlists.

Yes, although Sony calls them 'book-mark' lists, they are just like normal playlists on any other player to which you can add and delete up to 100 tracks each. That's enough for me on an 8Gb player.

Sony has a separate 'Playlists' folder (I'm guessing for playlists you make on WMP or such.)

Yes, black, red or blue would have been better.

I got this in a Cash Converters place - but it was new, box unopened - £52.

I can recommend the A, though, the white 16Gb one has been on clearance at Argos if you can find one.

It's solid - like the A.

Mostly metal with some plastic at the front and fairly heavy for its size.

I tried them playing the same tracks, both at the same settings, ie. VPT off, DSEE off, Clear Stereo off, Dynamic Normalizer off and with the EQ as below:





It could be my imagination but the A seems to have a slightly better headstage using my iems. I don't know whether its S Master amplifier makes a difference or not. But essentially they sound pretty much the same

Bear in mind, though, that both are volume-limited in the EU (20 out of 30 is fine for me) and while this is ok using iems, they won't drive headphones as well as non volume-limited players.

I charged the S while I was adding music to it 2 days ago - it takes 3 hours to fully charge - have listened to it a lot since, and only 1 of the battery segment indicators has gone down. The battery lasts twice as long as the A.

Also, the tru-black screen is pretty good with almost the same contrast as OLED and a lot better than other LCD screens for viewing angles and for seeing outside in the sun.

EDIT: The A is slightly louder - listening to the Hollies - The Air That I Breathe, 20 is ok on the A, but I need 22 on the S for the same volume. I can't really tell any difference in SQ between the two, however.

ok thanks for that nodirectionhome...i have been looking at the two players essentially you think the sound signature is the same? The battery life on the S is a killer feature for me, does the A have senseme and bookmarks like the S? thanks

No - they're very similar players (they have the same stock wallpapers and songs), but only the S has SenseMe and bookmark playlists.

If one sounds different than the other then I can't tell, just that the A is slightly louder.

If you can get the white A for £75 at Argos clearance, then it's excellent value for a 16Gb Sony.

The S, though, does have the aforementioned advantages.
