The problem is that Samsung made a special custom ROM without phone features and with more multimedia capacities. If you hack it with a normal Android ROM, you'll get non-working features and a not optimized firmware.
But don't worry, the G1 and G70 will be upgraded to Android 2.3 for sure (I don't know the release date though) and if they sell well, they will probably be upgraded to next Android versions too.

However, I'm less confident about the YP-G50. It doesn't sell well and will probably remain in version 2.1

Can't figure out what's keeping them out of the U.S. unless it is Apple's lawsuit. About ready to cancel my order now that Cowon's D3 has been updated to 2.3 (beta). Hoping it won't take Cowon long to finalize the firmware.

u can always buy one on ebay. and is the cowon d3 any good? I heard it wasnt that good, ie very buggy and glitchy and etcy.

@rock22: The D3 is a great sounding player, and has been updated several times by Cowon to iron out all the early reported flaws. It is Cowon's first foray into android as an OS, and clearly showed when first released. Now they have android 2.3 on it and previous apps that didn't work or worked with graphics flaws are working fine now. The latest firmware is only a Korean beta version, but it is clear they are still working to make it as good as possible with the hardware it has.

Is it better than the Samsung would be? Can't tell, since I don't have a Samsung to evaluate.

The D3 doesn't officially support the Android Market as far as I know.

Because of Samsung's silence regarding the actual release date I've been seriously considering the Archos gen 8 players however considering how superior the Galaxy Player is I've been holding out. Going to wait until the end of the month since that's when those stores expect them to arrive.

^^^ What he said. Might go with the Archos 43 myself, but I honestly love the killer sound that Samsung PMPs kick out (I'm an audiophile, and am spoiled on my Samsung P3.) This all depends on how long I can hold out without a PMP (I'm using my hacked Nook Color ATM, but it's just not the same T_T)

I personally would wait & see if amazon got it, as I've never had a bad RMA experience with them. Same with best buy & J&R Music World. I'd wait,...

As for getting an Archos - the choice is yours. The Samsung Galaxy Players will be the better performing devices. I'd also skip the Cowon D3 - not a good performer IMO.
