Few people have a spectrum analyzer in the ears.

The hissing/static noise is not audible when I use my Retro Panasonic monitor headphones. The noise only exists when I'm using the headphones that came with the player to test with, and my (primary) Sony MDR-XB20EX headphones, both of which are in-the-ear headphones. The hissing/static noise is nonexistent when I'm commuting due to the external background noise. I haven't tried using conventional ear-buds with my player though.
I'm positive it's not a tinnitus thing. To be sure that your player doesn't hiss, try wearing in-the-ear headphones (the ones with silicone tips). You won't hear the hissing when your player's not active. Before you try this, you have to be in a quiet area. Check to make sure that nothing is running. Make sure your player is in standby as well. 1. Push the power button on the player when you're using it like so. 2. Sweep the screen of the player to unlock it. 3. Turn the volume level down to 0. Or mute the player. 4. Play any song with the sound turned off. You should probably hear a subtle -click- followed by a somewhat quiet hissing sound. 5. Now pay close attention to the sound. Pause the song, then push the power button to put your player on standby again. The hissing should continue for a second or two, then the same subtle -click- can be heard before the player actually goes silent. This applies to my SGP 4.0. I'm not sure if you guys happen to experience this as well. |

I can partianlly confirm what bleunoir is experiencing.
Of course, using the included in-ears with my 4.0 is worse, but even with better phones or in-ears (like the shure e2c) that slight hissing and clicking won't go away. I'm using Playerpro btw. There's a clicking sound between the tracks and when I turn Playerpro on and off (back to stanby). However, when I turn the volume down to zero, I can't hear the clicks anymore. Also, I noticed that changing the Playerpro EQ-settings, the hissing becomes more pronounced/fainter, depending on the changes. Seems to be a software bug, maybe a sounddriver issue. Sadly we're not able to try Supercurio's sounddriver on our devices. Then we would know... Maybe we should record it as a bug in lebellium's bug post? |

I just want to say the SGP5 sound is soooo much better than my Optimus-V. I just plugged into my car speakers for the 1st time today. With my OV at full volume I have to turn up my car radio to "35-38" to get equivalent volume to normal "15-18" listening (distortion and not loud). With the SGP at just under full volume, I set my radio at "20-22" and get sound that's better than my radio. Does very well with bass. Included ear plugs are good. Haven't played much with the equalizer, but at least it has one!

I find the sq and volume on my SGP 5.0 to be pretty good, but it's even better when I put PowerAMP on it. The volume actually doubled, and the bass actually RATTLES my headphones. Really, quite a nice little player we have here - I'm quite impressed.

Ok, so I need to apologize (to sgp 5.0) I now use PlayerPro, with its equalizer (rock setting, bass all the way up). My cowon S9 use X-BASS setting. Even with my Sennheiser 558 the sound quality for me is now close between the 5.0 and the Cowon, very close. Very very close ![]() So I think the player plays a great part in rendering audio. Winamp was crap. same for Power Amp. I should'nt have incriminate the 5.0

PowerAMP was crap for YOU, it works perfectly for me. One man's trash is another man's treasure.

Anyone using the stock player?? I'll like to know why most of the soundAlive options have gone.
A guy from XDA reports that since the updates, the soundalive has dissapeared. I say that because I own a G50 (which I really love) and I find it a bit more full (on the warm side) and powerful than 4.0 even with voodoo. I can't understand why is G50 so underrated, it's a bit laggy sometimes, and really poor screen, camera..... but its SQ wise is top-notch, for me

I was, and all sound alive is there (USA-2.3.5). I switched to Cubed just because it looks so much cooler and has nice widgets. Also has equalizer.

Taking the hissing issue back up: I've tried Steve's kernel (mentioned in another thread here on the forum) and I can say two things: the hissing is gone as now it has voodoo sound driver installed, that bypasses the analogue component of the soundchip and I don't feel the need of using playerpro's EQ anymore - the music just sounds more free and intensive with it off. Just superb sound! I guess you should really give it a try, I have yet to experience any side effects of steve's kernel, I don't think there are any.

I'm in the USA, and I'm using the USA model of the SGP 5.0, so Steve's kernel is useless to quite a few of us.

The Voodoo kernel doesn't work on the 5.0, so that confirms the lack of the wolfson chip.
