How exactly is the D3 distinct from the J3?

Apart from having wifi, the D2 seems like a watered down version of the J3. Its prospective battery life is worse, it doesn't seem to support any new file formats and caps at the same old 32GB. Design-wise, it doesn't look any more appealing than the J3; in fact, I find it rather unexciting to look at.

These are just my initial impressions, but really, why would Cowon release a player that is almost identical to the one they released mere months before?

EDIT: dumb me, I should have read the specs twice before posting. It most definitely supports a welcome plethora of video codecs, but my skepticism still stands. Isn't the D3 primarily for audio anyway?

I think you're underplaying how different it is. To call it almost identical to the J3 is silly. None of these features may make any difference to you, but to other people they make it a very different player than the J3.

^No J3 does not run on Android.
Also,pre-order booking opened in India and 32Gb is priced higher than touch 4g 32Gb.
Looking at specs D3 does not have Wi-Fi N (I may be wrong but only b/g mode is shown at Indian site).

Of course the D3 is an full hardware/software upgrade compared to the J3 (screen size, file formats). But I will believe that upgradability may be the most important difference between the 2 players.
The 2011 Android based D3 is more likely to get a form of Rockbox (application form if not ROM/firmware) than the J3 or any other 2009-2010 player.

I hope Cowon will not put a high price on that device, people will rather get a Galaxy S or Desire HD instead for the same price...
They should keep it in the mp3 player classic price and of course lower the prices of J3

Cowon has a strange kind of pricing.
You think of buying 8gb then you find for small increment you can get 16gb when you think on 16gb then again for small increment there is 32gb.

i don't think it's strange at all. you pay for technology and profit margin with the 8GB version and the 16 GB and 32 GB version only increase memory, for a small profit (20% on top of that). unfortunately, prices have gone up a bit (at amazon at least).

it's pretty much the same with most other companies, although the increment increases (). apple for example has a 30-35% increment for their ipod touches 8,32and 64 but you have to consider that you're quadrupling from 8GB to 32GB, so the 32 GB version is a pretty interesting product.
sandisk has 10-35% on their fuze+ (4,8,16 GB)and samsung is just motherfucking crazy: p3 8GB msrp $149, 16GB $199 (app. 35%) and 32GB was $329, is 299 (from 65% to 50%, but still motherfucking crazy).

I was so excited to read about the D3...'till I came to battery life. 21 hours maximum for music!! I have no doubt they measure battery life playing MP3s at 128 which I doubt anyone now uses, so in reality it is probably 10 hours. If you use bluetooth it is probably 3 to 4 hours. Cowon seem to go a step forward and then a step back. The J3 had amoled screen with good battery life, so out came the X7 with great battery life but lousy screen. Now the D3 with great screen, wifi but dreadful battery life. The one thing steady about Cowon is sound quality but the rest is the product of jumbled thinking or clever sales manipulation. Cynical to say the least.

It's the Android OS that kills the battery life.

I still think the D3 will* be a fantastic all-in-one device if you need wifi and class-leading music reproduction in one package.

I'm seriously considering one for my next trip to visit my sister in Canada. (It's either that or a Rockboxed Archos 43.) No more schlepping a laptop around just to get email and browse the web. Put a 32GB card in there and I can get most of my music on it - all the essential stuff anyway.
