Help Law Enforcement & Source of MP3 files

Hello folks.

Today i was reading news regarding the damn G8-summit, that they're discusing a law that any Law enforcement officer at customs (airports, Frontiers) will confiscate your iPod, laptop etc to check for Illegal music downloads.

My question is: how they can check where did the mp3 file came from?

I checked a RS download VS a CD rip in DBPoweramp.... in audio properties in "Contains" Line the CD-ripped says CD TOC, ID3TagV2.3, album Art.

in the Downloaded file doesn't contains the CD TOC ....????

I know they will ask you for the proof of purchase of every CD, that's super-stupid, how come i will carry zillions of Proofs of purchase

Oh, that's real smart.Checking DAP's for illegal files while drug smugglers, terrorists ect get by since they will be too busy checking for proof of purchased music. How dumb is that???? Dumb enough for them to do it.

I go through and strip everything non-essential out of my tags anyways....including, on stuff purchased from Amazon, the "amazon song ID" numbers in the tags....lol. So I guess they'd think all of mine were illegal.

As a matter of my ripping/tagging process, I purposely strip out all ID3 tag info except for the basics: Artist, Title, Album, Year, Genre, Track Number and Comments.

This. Will. Never. Happen.

I won't allow it. And nether will ACLU and other global rights organizations. This anti-piracy thing is over-reaching itself.

Imagine the logistical impossibility of scanning everyone's digital music player at the airport. Not to mention the lawsuits that will arise when people's stuff gets damaged during scans.

Are they gonna check my girlfriend's clothing, shoes and handbag labels to make sure they are authentic and not knockoffs?

People need a reality check - this planet has far, far more important things to worry about than this nonsense.

About 9 gazillion reasons why this is among the worst ideas in human history.

F A I L and will not happen.

Does the G8 have the power to create laws? It would be nice if there were a link to the actual article rather than a vague summary. Without some details this is all pretty meaningless.

^ Good point skip252. Far as I know, the G8 acts primarily in a representative fashion, trying to work together to dictate economic policy, so yes, to a certain extent, member nations do attempt to be lawmakers.

Whether they are "laws" that are enforceable/actionable or if they merely make recommendations and suggest international economic policy shifts, I am unclear on.

This would be a case of an unenforceable initiative, clearly.

It already takes hours to go through airport security, customs, etc. Do they really want to add potentially more and more hours to the process?

Besides, in a post-9/11 world, should illegally downloaded music be a huge priority?

Good luck decrypting my shit mr GED educated airport security guy. This might warrant a hidden partition for those who travel a lot with music. Odds are though as Les pointed out, this won't happen.

Thanks folks for your replies, you cleared my curiosity, danke, gracias, thank you

I did a test copied a folder of the CD-rip and in MP3Tag, cleared all the tags, the CD TOC is gone.... but retag all again LOL

So this is not a valid way to indetify the source of an mp3 file, everyone could do that, remove tgas, rename and Voila!

Exactly why I said speculating without a link was meaningless. That article is over 3 years old. What relevance does it have now?

Details of the agreement, which is expected to be tabled at July's meeting of G8 nations in Tokyo, were leaked on the Internet yesterday.
I've noticed a decided lack of mp3 checks at the airports as I've traveled since then. Anybody else had their laptop or DAP frisked for illegal downloads in the last 3 years?

If not this is just some outdated silliness that may have had some relevance 3 years ago but doesn't seem to have a relevance to now.

The reason it never got anywhere is because ex parte searches are sharply limited by the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments in the USA, which provide that a person shall not be deprived of any interest in liberty or property without due process of law ...
