Why would SanDisk eliminate the "time used/time remaining" function? Do they know something we don't?

In a side by side comparison are the improvements in alphabet browsing, bigger screen, color screen, and album art worth it? Personal opinion, I know, but any thoughts from those who have a Zip?

Other than my very long refresh time, I'm quite happy with my Clip+ and can't see that the Zip is really an improvement.
rrfpacker....

Album art - you could remove it from your songs.

Long refresh time - removing album art might help. certainly cleaning up the tags will help.

Okay, I'll wait some time to see if other buyers have any similar experience.

I hope the Clip Zip doesn't have that problem?

This is the exception rather than the norm, I’ve read about very few issues and if one finds an issue with their player they should promptly return it as SanDisk is very good about RMAs. I’ve had 3 v1s & a v2 Clip for a few years now and only one has a lose headphone jack from over use and they all still work fine, even the one with the loose headphone jack. Although this is my fault from thousands of different jack in/outs and one time I put an oversize connector in which did the trick. Point I’ve received more than the original value I paid and you’ll find negative posts about anything your going to buy these days.

FreeZ5, I should have said it isn't that big of a deal on the Sansa, it is a big deal as it relates to my library. And most of my album art is large so that must be the refresh time issue. I will just have to deal as I have a Zen I can use if I don't want to wait for the refresh.

Thumbs up My Feedback

So I finally got my Clip Zip, and here's my (overall positive) feedback:

The Good:
  1. Hardware: The clip is visibly sturdier, even if the two side hinges could still benefit from being a little thicker.
  2. Hardware: With the Clip+, I very often pressed two buttons at once, just by not pressing on the exact middle of a side of the square. No such problem with the Clip Zip!
  3. Hardware: It looks better in person than on the pictures. It looks better than the Clip+.
  4. Software: Much simpler and more logical basic organization.
  5. Software: More options, too!
The Bad:
  1. Hardware: After a couple of days using it, the minus side of the volume button stopped clicking. It still works, but the tactile feedback is about gone.
  2. Software: Sometimes, as with the Clip+, the pause function doesn't work (no, I didn't lock the Clip): it stutters then keeps going; I have to turn it off and on again for the pause function to work again. It can be embarrassing when I try to understand something said to me.
  3. Software: In the original Clip, with audiobooks, you could rewind over tracks. With the Clip+ and the Clip Zip, you can't: if you miss a passage and it happens to be over two tracks, you have to go to the tracks menu, then to the track before, and then press forward until nearly the end of the track -- which you can't do without looking.

Just got the Zip, have not turned it on yet but what I can already say is that the build quality is not really good.
The control pad and above all the home/back button move a lot and look fragile
Doesn't sound good for the future

I haven't played with the zip yet but all the other Clips I've tried have loose buttons as well. My oldest one is still ticking other than a loose hp jack now but still works fine.

Well the buttons look more robust on the Clip+!

Is the Zip supposed to support gapless playback with the OF?
Doesn't work with my MP3 VBR V0 (Lame) files. I thought all Sansa players support Gapless playback with OF

They claimed that the Clip+ and Zip support gapless, but neither one is quite there.....close, but no cigar.

Sansas do "guess ahead" gapless instead of actually reading the info from the files. It does a fair job most of the time but I still get little clicks and skips at times. It beats the heck out of players like Sony that don't make any effort towards gapless. I've had time to stop, pull out a Sony and turn on the screen before I realized it as just a much longer gap between songs. Sometimes the gaps on one of those is really long.

Rockbox the thing and enjoy the gapless bliss. Rockbox spoils you. Everything that's supposed to play gapless does. Those AAC files that have have big skip in the OF play seamlessly for me in Rockbox. I just experimented around with a few of those. I mostly use Vorbis on my Rockboxed players and usually go all day with not a single gap or click.

The Zip actually feels more solid to me than the Clip+. The Clip+ has always felt a little "squishy" to me. The body creaks when I squeeze it to brace it when I use the volume one handed. I never had any trouble with durability with mine, it just never felt as solid as the original or the Zip.

None of the have the Sandisk players have the rock solid feel of a top end DAP but none have broken either. Considering what they cost I can live with a little creakiness as long as they keep working.

How does the Clip Zip sound? Does it have the same quality of the earlier Clips?

You can get the technical information from the Rockbox AMS Wiki. dfkt took his apart and posted pics of the internals here.

Well, I finally took the plunge and ordered a 32GB class 4 card. I'm very curious what my refresh times will be like.....they have always been rather quick with a 16GB card, like under 4 minutes.

My refresh times with the clip+ and a 16gb card is under 5 minutes. I'm thinking of getting a 8gb clip zip and a 32gb card and would like to what the refresh time would be. If it's too long, I'll probably just get another 16gb card.
