Marvin, thanks for trying out the diagnostic mode!
This confirms that a) diagnostic mode can still be enabled in the traditional way b) it indeed uses a silabs tuner (si4702 or compatible) c) it has the same amount of DRAM (and hopefully the same configuration) as the previous clips.

Sure, I'm happy to have them all singled-out, fruit companies and carnivorous companies alike.

It was my pleasure.
I've enjoyed Rockbox on two Fuzes and two Clip+ so far, so I was happy to check that for you. Sounds like you are encouraged about the potential of a port for this player, which is good news.

This should be welcomed by some of the people reading this thread.

Nope, not at all. But I don't like products and companies contraining me and telling me what I can and cannot do. It doesn't work well with government, it doesn't work well with private industry.

On the plus side - better screen.

But they've shafted me with the colour options again! That's the third time they insist on only having the 8GB version in the dull colours. This constant decision of forcing you to buy a smaller player to get the colour you want is incredibly grating.

It's also very sad that they didn't use the Clip Zip as an opportunity to launch a microSDXC standard and futureproof it a bit. I was looking forward to shoving in a 64GB card in the near future. (I'm going by the listed specs which say it's a bog standard mSDHC slot.)

Yeah, but at least they have something other than black as an option. While it's not too exciting gray; at least it's something a bit different.

I ordered the CZ from Sandisk on Friday, so I can see for myself if I'll like it as a player I'll use frequently. So far, from all the info in this thread, it looks like a good (not great) continuation of the Clip heritage.

I agree - the orange one looks lovely. Just wish they'd offer it in 8GB. Given how successful this line of players are and how cheap they are to produce, I'm sure they could afford a few more SKUs.

It's still great value and probably superior in sound quality like the last two Clips, but the one area Apple's always outdid them is that you can have it in any shade you choose. Seems like a really silly area to keep dropping the ball when it's easily fixed. (Even the CNET review wrongly assumes you can get all colours in the 8GB capacity.)

Amazon can ship to India, so I assume should be to most countries. Waiting for 8GB prices to drop a little.

newegg.ca and sandisk.ca ship to Canada.

You might want to be more specific in future (or update your Location field).

Steve

I'm sure you'd be able to find a forum member willing swap the exterior of a colorful 4GB Zip with the exterior of a dull colored 8GB Zip for you. I'd be willing myself, but shipping hates my country so it might not work out so well for you.

I guess Colorware could start up a re-colorization service for the Clips.

amazon.com won't ship a Clip Zip to Canada. Unlikely to ship further afield. Maybe some of the independent sellers.

I saw the Clip Zip at eBay.com over the weekend, at a premium price. I'd just give it a little bit of time.
